Best Price on POR-15 Paint?
Not that I would EVER have rust to treat......
I can't find any better price than the list price of $43.50 for the six-pack of 4-oz. POR-15 paint. My favorite POR-15 seller PORSTORE(dotsk)COM has disappeared. There are others, but they all seem to have the politically correct list price. Anybody have a favorite seller with a better price? USD please. Ken300D

That is up a little from a year ago
I thought I bought my six pack, well it must be about 20 months ago from Amazon.com and as I remember it was $32.00.

I have never seen a better than list price. Quite a monopoly. At least the stuff is good.

At that price they should probably sell it in 1-oz perfume squirter bottles.
I find that I can re-seal the can with a plastic bag about two times after opening. After that the stuff turns rock hard and I can't use the rest. Most of the time I never get to use the whole 4-oz can. But it is fantastic stuff. Ken300D

POR makes coatings to apply over rust. It bonds to the rust and seals it so it cant rust any more. Very durable stuff. Check their website, there is many other products that they carry.

Many of the local autoparts stores are now carrying a POR-type paint, which is a few bucks cheaper. Recently used the chassis black, at the same time was using orange engine POR for a bbc, and they are very similar. Another competing product is made by Wurth GmBh.All the same.

Since its getting into the warmer weather, and car shows will be springing up, try some vendors at car shows.
They often have discounts below list, although not too much, but you also save by not paying shipping. A similar product, IF you can find it, is Hammerite;s Rust Cap. I cannot find anyone who sells it. Ken300D, Northern VA is not that far from Carlilse, PA. Their Sping show is coming in a few weeks. If you've never been to a Carlilse show, you need to go; there are quite large. You will find several POR15 vendors, along with almost anything else. Their IMORT show in in mid May. Its not as large, but it is targetted to imports

They can demand list price because folks think it's a monopoly. If you're looking for particular auto/farm-type colors (i.e. Chevy Orange, Ford Blue, John Deere Green, Caterpillar Yellow), they probably are the only source, but if you want "plain" colors like grey, silver, black, etc., what you need to know is that POR-15 is simply a moisture-cured urethane. You can get moisture-cured urethane paint from Sherwin-Williams, McMaster-Carr, and all the other usual suspects where you'd find industrial-type paint. This stuff is used on oil rigs, pipelines, and in other "heavy-duty" paint scenarios, so it's far from uncommon.

No way Dan. I did the frame rails and floor pans in my chevelle. ( still ahve to scrape off the facgtory undercoating from the underside of the pans). I've partially done the undercarriage of my Tahoe, which runs through winter salt, so it needs a bulletproof coating. I'll finish that this summer when its off the road ( and my Benz is on! )
Naw, not snake oil. Good stuff. A hard permanent epoxy-like coating that binds to rust. A car restorers dream. Used thei enigne paint on teh 427 ( chev orange), and it looks sweet. A glossy coat when dry. |

I paid $24 from KBS Coatings. I only needed a pint. Best bet is to put it in smaller containers upon opening. Had to pay $7.95 for shipping though. Paul.

No, I wasn't implying POR-15 is snake oil, which would mean it's fake, fraudulent, ineffective, or non-existent. It does indeed perform as advertised. My point is that POR-15 is not a unique sole-source item -- there are many brands and suppliers of moisture-cured urethane paint.

Can we buy any of this "moisture-cured urethane paint" off the shelf?
I have used POR-15 before and it is good. However the sources are scarce and price and shipping are high. |
