1987 300D Rear Bumper Repair

Hello all,

I have a 1987 300D Turbo with a crack in the rear bumper. Is it possible to repair and paint this or should I just look for a good used one in a boneyard?

Also, were these bumpers originally painted or just sanded smooth and mounted on the car. If they were painted, did they have a "gloss" finish or matte?

Thanks in advance,

the tenor man

Would like to see the problem if you can attach a pic. Those bumpers are 2 piece and depending on which piece is cracked and how bad will determine which way to go. Those were definately a non gloss finish in the bumper itself,,, the impact strip was not painted I believe.

Worse than I thought!

Well, I've removed the bumper only to find that it is in fact broken into pieces under the impact strip. I'll pick one up from a boneyard in Cochranton on Saturday.

I believe that these are made from polypropolene and this one (a Florida car) is very brittle.

I also found (after removing the impact strip) that they are painted with the Galinet gray, but the plastic nearly matches the paint color. I've tried to wet sand it using 800 grit wet paper and the weathered finish looks better than I expected. I'll go to a 1000 grit and soon post a photo of the before and after sanding.

Thanks again,
