Paint chip city

Over the last month or so, I've gotten at least 10 new paint chips on my car. I have no idea how this is happening. Go to the grocery store, come out, new paint chip. Go home, park in the driveway, come out two hours later, I notice a new paint chip. And on and on. Is this paint FLAKING off? I just can't believe there'd be this many paint chips all of the sudden. Can't be that many stupid people bumping into my car.

Must be the door ding elves, damaging unsuspecting cars and sneaking away cackling.

Are the chips all the way to metal or just to another layer of paint?

I have gotten many paint chips from gravel trucks spillage and poor road construction asphalt aggreate spilled over the NJ highways. All in the front surfaces, not to the metal just thru the initial paint layer.
I have seen in Performance Products a chip "filler & repair" kit.
Has anyone tried this product and with what results?? I believe it retails for about $ 60 bucks.
That would be better than the $ 1,800 the dealer estimated. I also do not expect the same professional results, However I think I can improve the look with out all that cash...

Yeah it drives me nuts as well.

Cars just get beat to hell, just live with it until you can't stand it then have it painted. Having the clear bra put on the front seems to help.

In about 2000 MB had paint issues for awhile since new European environmental regulations changed the type of paint they could use. But it affected any car built in Europe not just MB. I still remember my friend bought a new S430 in 2000 and *****ed to the dealer 6 months later because the paint was chipping like crazy. They sent out a MB zone rep and fixed it.

OTOH the latest MB paint seems to be tough as nails.

chipped down to the primer in many cases

Mine has chips on it from morons bumping into it in parking lots with keys in their pockets, and worst is at Home Depot when people are loading long boards into their cars. Just one more reason why I park way away from others, but then some idiot set their cart in the parking lot, and it gave me a really, REALLY bad $200 dent to get fixed.

I know they have touch up paint, but when your car is "done" it looks like it has bandaids all over it. Much better to just leave the paint chips there.

I know it drives me nuts. At school they just swing their doors right into your car, they couldn't care less if they damage it.

I was walking to my car once and some guy had the door to his POS Ford open, and was leaning it against my car, leaning against his door talking on the phone. It was my $500 school car so I didn't care about whatever the door did to it. But the point is they have no respect for others property. If my door is going to hit someone elses car I put my notebook in between to prevent damage, even if the other car is beat to death I don't care its not mine I have no right to damage it.
If it was my good car I would have *****ed at him and been like so your going to give me $100 to fix that dent right?
