199 Black Pearl roof repaint - which paint is best?

Pollen ruined the clearcoat n the roof this year of my car.

What paint should I specify - Glasurit or PPG or what?

Prep should be pretty easy, I would think because of the rain gutters that block off the roof, no panels to blend in.

I want the front and rear bumpers repainted too at the same time.

But the windshield has a crack in it, would it be better to have the windshield replaced first, or the roof painted first? Or does it even matter?

Thanks

The hood and fenders of my E500 were recently repainted in 199 and the shop used Sickens. It looks phenomenal. I think Sickens and Glasurit are generally acknowledged to be the top of the universe of car paint. If the bumpers are in the same color, you should have them done at the same time, it'll probably save money because they won't have to mix paint each time.

you dont have to worry about the glass

A good painter will do the rope trick with the gasket so the new paint will flow under the gasket

basically the rope holds up the gasket and you tape the exposed part of the gasket off so not to get paint on it..

Didn't you already get this done, Jim?

Joe, are you talking about the windshield gasket? That's interesting. I never heard that before. Of course, the gasket had better still have plenty of flexibility in it! If not, maybe Jom should just get his cracked windshield replaced with new gaskets as long as he's at it.

BTW, Jim, if you have had it painted, post some new pictures of it. I'll bet it looks pretty sweet with the new paint and everything else you've done to it!

The windshield doesn't have a gasket.... its bonded in. I would probably get the old screen pulled out first, and have the car painted without one fitted. If there is any corrosion behind the windscreen trim, then this can be addressed easily.

Just watch out for the top edge of your fenders closest to the windshield, the glass shop chipped both sides of my newly painted fenders upon fitting the new glass!

No gasket? Is this true of the SEC only? I know some Benzes do have gaskets and assumed they all did.

I know that neither of my W126's have gaskets.... SEL or SEC. The rear screen does use a conventional gasket/seal though.

So, what is it bonded in with, a bead of silicone?

Urethene,,, the glue from hell. The windshield becomes part of the structure of the car. All the mouldings come off around the windshield on the 500E,, no need to pull the front or back windows when repainting. If a glass installer chipped the paint on my fenders during an install, there would be pure hell to pay.

I wasn't too happy about the chips, but the guy was doing it for cash, so I cant really complain. The car is solid black anyway, so was easy to touch in.

Pete, do you guys remove and replace glass or have a glass guy do that?

We have a local independent come to the shop and do all my urethene installs. I am very fussy about glass work and these people are just the same, so it works for me.
