W126 front and rear bumper repainting
On my W126 the front and rear bumper need a partial repaint.
The rear bumper has a scrape on the upper left rear corner, and is scraped up in the center portion only. Can it be spotted in, as the rest of it is beautifully repainted. The front one has 17 years of stone chips on it, and could use frankly, a full repaint. Can these repairs, be done WITHOUT removal of them, at a moderate cost? I checked with 2 body shops, and each of them quoted about $1,500 parts and labor, using the standard Mitchell's crash guide to draw up the estimate. (that involves R/R of the bumpers included with those estimates.) As I will have to pay from my pocket, (no insurance billing involved) that seems painfully high to me --- but I don't know.. If I supplied the paint, myself (I will have some from prior work probably) shouldn't the cost be a bit less. If those items are taken care of the car will be virtually perfect looking, for a daily driver or a show-and-shine quality car.

Seems a bit high for around here anyway. What is the labor rate ? Using Mitchell, it would be REAL hard to come up with that kind of price to do what you say. $700 to $800 is more realistic. That particular job would be hard to spot in, as when you rub the blend, you will create a real shiny spot in that area, and the bumpers are naturally a bit dull.

To be exact,,,, when I came in to work I did an estimate for a complete overhaul on both bumpers, and one hour repair on each, with complete refinish and clearcoat, and it came to $774. Our door rate is $46 per hour for straight labor and refinish. That includes flex additive and hazardous waste removal. There could be additional charges for misc. clips and hardware, but no way could I get anywhere close to $1500. With 4 hours repair on the front and 2 on the rear, it still only came to $935.

The bumpers on a W126 sedan are a quick removal.
I'll assume the SEC uses the same convention. R&R, and full repaint is the way to go. As stated, the paint is not a shiny as the body, so it's best to refinish all of the paint. I can't see where it would take more than an hour or so to R&R the bumpers... I just pulled a euro set and it was only 4 bolts for the front and 4 for the rear. Took about 20 minutes to pull both.... I said overhaul, which means taking the bumpers completely apart, which should be done to do a quality, factory like repair.
