What do you think caused this rust spot?

Picture is attached.
This is on a 1985 300td below the rear driver side window.
It seems to be in a weird spot. Is it indicative of something? What do you all think?

that is something you need to address asap. pull the molding off and you
might see more hidden. let it go and you will have a large hole.
It is caused by water, salt, dirt accumulation under the molding.

I think you need to get on it.

the longer you wait the costlier it will become. rust never sleeps. where there is a little, there is more.

isaiah,

judging by the shape, it appears it is inline w/ the pillar suggesting further that it is something internal. could be a plugged water drain line that is overflowing down your pillar

i would first start by removing that metal strip. i believe that will pop out as most trim pieces like that do. see if there is further damage running to the right.

the best thing you can do though is to start removing some interior pieces to see if you can find the rust's start and end point and treat accordingly

I have always blamed the type of body primer used by the factory. it seems to lift and let water penatrate under it too easily. Yours possibly got started from a very small scratch from the trim application. Or where the plastic mount for the stud on the trim penatrates the body panel.

Another guess is installing the plastic retainer in the hole originally might have scratched the paint and what you have now visable is the long term progression of that effect. I have seen many break out even in areas that make no sense. Anyways as soon as you pull that trim the original source is usually obvious. This problem is far from a mercedes exclusive. Yet in my mind they are the leaders.

I have it on my 300TD

I have/had the same rust damage. It starts around the hole used by the trim clip. I had to cut out the rust, weld in a plate and fill. You can see
that once you get the trim off and the window out, the rust is probably
much more than you see. Dirt traps moisture. After I fixed this spot and
one above the tail light, I took off all the trim and found lots of trapped
dirt, and some just beginning rust. I fixed it all and now await my paint
shop appointment. Only a couple shops here will spray C/C Glasurit 55.
Take a look at my gallery to see how much metal I had to cut out. My rust
looked much like yours.
