Painting the Sway Bar - rust and grease

OK - laugh; yes, I'm paining the Sway Bar as I replace the bushings.

How do you prepare greasy rust for paining

I used mineral spirits to remove the grease, and rough sanded the bar

But I'm thinking there's still some grease in the rust.

Guess I could sand all the rust off - but I wasn't planning that great an effort.

Your thoughts please.

You can get grease and wax remover from any body and paint supply shop. I bought a bottle a couple months ago, I think it was about $15 for a pint or thereabouts.

Wipe it down with lacquer thinner.
Prime it with a rust inhibiting paint like Rustoleum and you should be good to go for the finish coat !

I'd think a little fun with some emery tape might go well, to make sure the majority of the rust is gone before using a rust converting primer.

I tend to go overboard though, so your mileage may vary!
