MAACO Paint Job

Hello,
I just wanted to post a couple of photos of my 120K 1996 W210 that was recently painted at a local MAACO here in Florida. The car was pretty tired when I brought it there, with the usual rust spots on the doors, fender, hood, etc. It also has numerous small dents and dings, and had at one time been rear ended, which caused the trunk to look like it had closed on something. Not a bad job for 1300.00 I guess I'll keep it for a while, since I've already done the front spring perches, head gasket, etc.

Well, from what I can see in your pictures, you got your money's worth out of MAACO. Looks pretty good. Did you do any of the prep work yourself?

MAACO Paint Job Prep Work

The only thing that I did to get the car ready for MAACO was to remove the side trim on the doors and front fenders. There was rust under there and I didn't want it painted over. My only complaint is that there is a bit of overspray here and there, so I'll be busy for a while removing it. But the car looks great overall.

They removed a small dent in the rear below the license plate. I forgot to mention before that I had also removed the grill and hood ornament. They also had to completely strip the roof, trunk and hood because the clear coat had failed and they didn't want to put good paint over bad. I appreciated that attention to detail. I had a 200K 1987 VW Jetta sprayed by a MAACO in New York years ago with similar results. You pretty much get your money's worth.

Looks wonderful. Were you able to specify the brand of paint and clear to use? What brand was used? What MAACO shop did the work?

I meant to ask about the brand of paint, too. Was this one of their standard paint jobs. I think they have various tiered prices for different levels of service.

I didn't specify the paint but I think they used DuPont paint, which MAACO will warranty for 4 years. I expect to get a lot more than that because the car is garaged. They could have used Rustoluem with a paint brush and the car would have looked better than it did before the paint job.

I should have mentioned that I used the service that was second from the top. I believe the paint job alone was 599.00 and the rest of the 1300.00 total was for rust and dent/ding removal. The clear coat had failed completely on the roof, trunk, and hood, and these had to be stripped down to bare metal. They did not charge me for this extra work because it had not been factored into the original estimate-talk about a reputable shop! The only down side was time. The told me I'd have the car back in a week, but it took two. Other than that, I'm completely satisfied. If you look closely at the car, you'd see that it's definitely not a 5000.00 paint job. But the car is not even worth that, so 1300.00 got me exactly what I wanted for this car. The shop is in the Tampa area.

Do you know if they'll use paint that the customer specifies as long as he is willing to pay any extra costs associated with it?

I'm not sure if they'll do that because the warranty their paint jobs, and I believe that part of that warranty stems from the pain they use.

Are you saying they go to great pains when they paint your car? Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

Wow, I just noticed you're twice retired. That must be nice. I'm just "tired . . ."
