I could be mistaken as my memory gets less trustworthy as I age, but I'm pretty sure I watched the Safelite guys pick up the trim after the glass was in the car and pound it into the gasket with rubber mallets.

I've never watched someone do it, I just know what the manual says.

Did you trim get all bent after he hammered it in? It's pretty flimsy stuff so I'm not sure I'd want to hammer it in.

3m window weld is not needed with the w123 seal.. mine didn't have it from the factory. That stuff is for cars that get the windshields glue in.

plus that stuff is a pita to remove once it has cured. I removed a front and rear windshield from a delorean and boy was that nerve wrecking. The rear was a pita since it had curves and little or know access to the curves.

Only thing to do now is do it right

Yes, chrome strips should go in BEFORE you install the widow in the car.

X3. I watched the tech do my windshield two years ago. and in my short stint in an autobody shop, we Never put the trim in first. not saying it cant be done the other way, but the trim functions as a lock, and it seems it would be harder to do first, without it the seal can flex way more.

when I did the 3'x4' pieces of flat windshield in my step van SOLO, i installed the lock trim last- that was a plastic trim piece that went in- I did buy a nice tool to get it installed easier- but that is not relevant for this application.

anyways- is it done yet?? success??!!

Answer

Start at step #9, and it should go right in.

Rear Window Seal Replacement
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123RearWindowSeal

Disregard step #16 and #23, as they don't apply to the front.

Have a great day.

All my past experience was that the trim goes in last... but MB is different on everything else so it is no surprise they put the trim in first...
The FSM and RANDY LEO say it goes into the rubber first... and Randy takes these cars apart and puts them back together for sport. So I believe him when he says something like that.

He did not have to do anything wrong for it to crack... this is the norm for old glass. That is why it is not recommended.

$175 from safelite, work guaranteed against leaks for life. Can't beat it. And when they crack the windshield they come out with another. Dunno why anyone would dick around installing a used (scratched) wind shield.

Yeah.. I guess it was due to the old glass and cold weather. Shame. I made it all the way to the last corner. However.. unless you are pretty close to the car you can't see it, so i'm driving with the big crack for now. If the cops pull me over that just happened last night.
