What's required to convert to a widebody?
I was wondering if doing a wide body conversion on my car (560SEC) would require having the original quarter panels or not. Mine are rusted and should probably be replaced, but if my ultimate goal was to convert it to a wide body anyhow, do I still need the original quarter panels underneath the new pieces?

Is it a kit, or something you'll have to fab up yourself? A kit manufacturer should have the info on whether you need to keep them or not. If the kit's pieces are not full replacement parts, I would assume you'd only need to keep the attachment points on the original panels.

I'm not sure. I think I've seen a kit for this somewhere, but can't remember where. I figured that if I don't need the origina; body panels to support the kit panels, then I can just cut out the rust and then put on the new body panels.

I only wanted to know if the existing body was needed to support the add on pieces.

I've done a couple of Porsche wide body installs. The new panel requires the old existing one to be in place for fitment. Trace a cut line, remove, cut weld...
I'd be interested in knowing where the MB panels come from and how its done as well. |

This will probably all come to nothing for me, but since I have rusted quarter panels AND I would like to have a widebody SEC, I figured I'd ask just in case.

Thanks for posting the link. It would not let me see the page without signing up and I don't have time at work. I'll check it out later,

The widebody thread will answer all your questions and show you what the AMG kit included and how it is installed. I have discovered that the AMG widebody sheet metal is very similar to the period Porsche panels. I'm beginning a widebody conversion on a 1988 300CE to replicate the AMG 320CE. The late 80's 911 ( non turbo ) rear fenders are almost identical to the period AMG sheetmetal. Use your imagination and you can see what I mean...the wheel arch is identical to the C124 arch. The SEC widebody rear in my mind appears to be very much like the rear 944 turbo sheetmetal. You'll see this when you follow the UK thread

That's great. Thanks. Are those panels welded or riveted on? If you are doing this and want to document the process photographically here, that would be terrific.

The one kit I have seen was made of some plastic-type material they called Duraflex. I'm not sure how that is attached, probably with some type of epoxy.

Less chance of cracking over time. The original AMG kits for the SEC and CE are rare with a set or two known to exist in the UK that came from Stratton's stock. I'm not sure if the AMG facilities in the USA ever stocked or installed these kits as the only cars that I know of were Euro or Japanese. The Porsche sheetmetal has always intrigued me so I'm going for it. Same period, same shape and curious if AMG may have based their design on what Porsche was doing with widebodies !!! I'll keep you posted as I can't start until my wheels come in from the UK. Having a set of 3 piece AMG/OZ Aero's built which are period to the CE widebody and also used on the SEC. I'll run 8.5x17 ET18 front and 10x17 rear with a negative 13 offset. The rears should push out 3" without using spacers. Register at the UK site and you'll get an eyeful !!!!
