Time to part with Gramps, The rust won.

It's a sad time but I think I need to retire my 300CD. Gramps was a great car that ran without ever letting me sit. The fight with rust is more than I can keep up with. Would it be better to part him out or sell as a parts car ? Has about 390,000 on it, original motor and tranmission. Motor runs good but has some blow by, trans works very well but has a seal leaking (about a pint every 1000 miles). I can't send him off to a yard. It would be nice if parts of him could live on in other cars.

I would suggest listing it for sale in the cars section and let a forum member get a hold of it. Not many people are going to want parts off a 390,000 mile car. I assume the rust is getting structural? Spring perches, floors, etc?

BEst is determined by your outlook. Parting a car takes more effort than does selling whole. It will be up to the new owner to determine use ie parts car or driver if you decide to sell it whole. Just make sure to document the sale so you are off the hook regarding liability.

Now 390,000 is just starting to break in. That's what people on Ebay say all the time .

The rust is structural now. I don't have the space or time to repair it. I'll list it in the for sale section later today.

Thanks for your input.
