when I saw the spot of rust on the battery tray, I about cried, then I dug further and pulled it out, cleaned all the acorns out and found the holes... on both sides of the sealer. washed it out really well, and pulled up the floor mat. found a towel and a police billy club under there.
the sad thing is the soundproofing is in perfect condition. I'm going to have to bust out the perfect asphalt and fix the rust... I could clean up the rust from above, and patch in some metal and por 15 it, but I'd worry about moisture trapped under the asphalt.

I agree, that asphalt does nothing to preserve the metal at all. just holds all the water against it. Probably be better off with it gone and some new dynamat or something over it.

I can't believe that stuff is asphalt, i was chiseling it out, saying to myself, what the F IS this stuff, some kind of ancient foam that hardened? Of course, now it all clicks and makes sense.

EDIT- Just looked at the pics, that is such a PITA area to repair, not a straight flat panel anywhere, and a compound joint on top of it.

I just did this on mine- heres a thread if you want to go the cut off wheel madness route- http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1520648-pics-under-battery-tray-not-rusted.html

It would have taken $2,000 to get them.

No joke.
