W123 sedan under rear bumper panel
 

G'day Folks,

I've got a bit of a tricky repair I'd like to do on my W123 sedan under the rear bumper. The panel on my car has been repaired just above the exhaust - which I guess is a common rust area - but the rest of the panel has been left in a somewhat battered state. Previous drivers have been bumping into stuff...

Does anyone happen to have a similar picture of a (nearly) perfect panel like the second shot shown above?

I think I know which bit to bash - but I'd like to make sure first!

Note that mine has three thread pins per side for the US bumper, but yours will only have one. When my car had these skimpy Euro bumpers installed, my friend said it looked like it had a mini-skirt :D

Where does all the anti stone chip go?
 

Bugger - I've gone and sanded it all off and I can't remember where all the anti stone chip goes...

On the back I remember it going all the way up and under the bumper - but on the sides I can't remember if it goes up to the first designer crease or not.

Has anyone got a good picture of the anti stone chip just behind the rear wheels (w123 saloon / sedan)?

(Patrick I've looked through your flickr pictures and I can't find one that shows it for sure)

The anti stone chip is on the flat portion of the underbody behind the rear wheels, after the fender has curved inward as it curves down. The inside of the wheel well is coated with this material also for obvious reasons. See #3 above.

Thanks again for the reply Patrick - the view I need is indeed #3 above and I can see the tell tale mark in your paintwork left by the US bumper... but I can't see where the stone chip goes from those marks on the side of the panel towards the rear wheel arch. That's the bit I've removed and can no longer find.

The stone chip texture goes all the way into the wheel well arch inside. The entire inside surface of the wheel well is textured with the anti stone chip material. Does that answer? Sorry I might not have understood it correctly. Maybe a photo of what you're currently working on would help?

Oh now I see it. Sorry, my imagination isn't good.

The stone chip area is where the flat portion starts on the underside of the quarter panel. You know where there is a flat spot as the arch hits the bottom most edge, that's where the textured portion begins.

The dotted line on your image is too high. In the second image, move the dotted line all the way down to the edge of the fender. That's where the anti stone chip texture begins, and actually is a continuation from the inside of the wheel well. So the entire wheel well area is coated, and it continuesto this flat portion up until the fender curves toward the center of the car.

When finishing up that part, you can leave it painted nicely then apply those 3M anti stone chip "clear bra" paint protection products, maybe up to the first designer crease.
