POR 15 goof

I am pleased to report that I used the POR 15 system last weekend and, as reported by many others, it's great stuff.

However, I by chance was later reading a blog with a step by step account of one guy's repairs to his 300d, and he happened to mention that after applying the marine clean, then the metal ready, he rinsed off the surface with water very well after each step.

DOH. I don't recall any mention of rinsing off the surfaces between steps, on my containers. I received no other instructions with my order.

Anyone have insights here? Tks

After using Marine clean you are meant to wash with water - it does say so on the container - well it does on mine!

I guess here you want to remove any sludge / muck / emulsions and make sure the surface is clean before you apply the next stage.

As metal ready is water based / or water soluble (I'm not sure which) you need to do the first step to make sure there is no oil about as it just won't do what it is meant to. Alternatively you can apply metal ready to a surface where you know there isn't any oil / wax etc etc... Try applying metal ready to an oil contaminated surface and you'll see how it just drips off.

From what I can work out POR15 metal ready and KBS rust blast are solutions with zinc. When they dry you can get a powdery deposit that isn't good for the next layer of POR15 proper... so the point of washing after this stuff is to remove any powder from the surface to help with the POR15 paint adhesion.

So to cut a long boring story short - as long as you didn't have any oil muck grime or ming on the surface you painted with POR15 then you'll probably be OK.

If you are worried leave the surface for a few weeks and if you don't see any specks of rust coming through then you know you are OK.

If you are really worried buy some POR strip / scrub it all off and start again.

Thanks, Army. The surface was very clean to start with, apart from the rust and I did wipe it carefully between steps. I think I should be fine.
