Just want to say how nice your work looks. Great photography too.

Thanks for sharing all this.

Help Me Save My 300SD

Been reading the rust related threads and this one is very informative. Any idea how to deal with this torsion bar mount (under battery tray) issue in the attached photograph?

As you can see the structure is compromised. Since the torsion bar mount has moved, even if I can find a way to reconstruct it and save my 300SD I would need some reference dimensions to correctly position the torsion bar mount before welding it all back together.

Good Work

I really like the repairs you have done and I would like to do similar repairs to my 1989 420SEL.

What kind of welding are you doing to repair the rust on the body tubes?

I have never welded. Can a beginner do a decent weld on structural body points like the control arm attachment points?

My lower control arm body attachment points are heavily rusted and I would like to reinforce them with new metal. What specification of steel do you recommend?

Any and all advice and recommendations are sincerely appreciated.

I'm a beginner welder as well. I had my uncle help out on a good amount of the welds. I did some of the more patch type jobs where it was not structural. The goal was just to seal up the hole and ensure water wasn't able to get in. I was going for function not looks.

I would have someone who is more in the know about welding do the structural work. My dads 300SD (link in my first post on this thread) had some more severe rust. We had to re-do one the rear passenger lift-pad and jack support structure. We ended up welding 1/4" plate steel (see pics in the other thread)

The body tubes we were less lucky on, a good amount of the original metal was there so we just ended up patching it up to prevent further rusting but they are not lift-able points anymore--frankly I dont think they should have been lift able points in the first place that just seems like a bad idea.

Anyway, check out that first link in the first post. As for the steel, we used mostly 16 gauge steel, 18-22 on the smaller stuff that wasn't so structural and required more forming.

You really want to grind down the metal and see what you're working with. I might just be a lot of surface rust that has bubbled up the undercoating or it might be a big hole that can be patched over.

This seems like its above my current skill level. We had to weld in that area too but the mount was still in its original place and was not moved. If you look at the first link in my first post you'll see what I mean.

Best of luck with the repair!
