Anyone know anything about Binks sprayers?
 

I received three Binks BBR sprayers from a guy and am going to check over/refurbish all three, keep one for use and start to do some basic painting.

Anyone familiar with them? their parts sources? their quirks?

I bought a one quart paint can/cup to use, these are all HVLP type- sprayers, am looking at getting the $18.95 spring and needle kit as well.

Then off to the wonderful world of painting!:D

Interested in people with experience with Binks and/or this model, especially.

I haven't used a Binks in years. I have never used their HVLP guns but I did use their older guns quite extensively. They were work horses. I used my last one for just about everything from primering to sealer spraying.

They were finicky beasts. Them suckers had to be CLEAN and the paint had to be mixed perfectly to get a good finish coat which is which why I moved away from them. Mine were all suction types and the biggest complaint I had about them is the cups were fragile and poorly made. It was almost impossible to prevent them from leaking while moving the gun when painting. Made for a sloppy work space and multicolored boots.

I'd rate them as a good mid-range level.

If you have three then set one up for primer (larger orifice and air diffuser), one for painting base coat/single stage (1.9mm orifice and diffuser) and one for clear (no smaller than 1.5mm orifice).

Expect to spend as much time cleaning the gun as you do spraying (another reason I went away from them) and OIL them every time you put them away with a good air tool oil. By cleaning, I don't mean just spraying some thinner through them, I'm talking about taking them completely apart. All the fittings, valves and slides need to be cleaned and oiled. The needles WILL stick if you don't.

So "bump" that!:P

I used to use them in the auto industry. They didn't spray as well as other high quality brands, so it was easier to imitate factory defects with them.

The last comment is correct. Don't let them stay dirty, or you have a lot of trouble with them.

My only experience with Binks is their Model 7 which was a mainstay in the refinishing industry a couple of generations ago. Model 7 was NOT HVLP---put a nice cloud of finely atomized paint into the air.

I kept bumping til I got the answer, that's why people bump.

And SOME of that actually ended up on the surface you were painting.:D

But what landed on the surface looked pretty good.

I had a friend of my Dad paint my '64 Falcon convert back in 1967. He used a Binks 7. I took a picture of him, and the cloud of mist was impressive- in fact it nearly obscured the light coming in the garage door windows.

First time I used a HVLP gun, I was stunned by the complete lack of any such cloud. I had a quart of thinned enamel, and just wanted to get some gloss on a '49 Chev to highlight the imperfections, mostly on the sides of the car. After I had a good coat on the areas I wanted to see, I just kept painting to empty the gun, I got the entire car shot! It was only a single coat, but still, I was impressed at far the paint went.

Yup. The first time I used a HVLP gun I kept opening the needle to try to get the "cloud" I was used to having. It was one of the worst paint jobs I ever did. Runs, clumps, streaks, the whole gamut.:o

The next time I used the HVLP (after swearing I'd NEVER use that P.O.C. again:o) I used it properly. I found the 1/2 gallon of paint I'd pre-mixed was WAY too much for the panel I was painting. Wasted almost a quart of some primo 2K urethane enamel. That chit ain't cheap!

Big difference in hair color also. With the old gun, even using a painter's sock, my hair was whatever color I was painting. Now, with the exception of spraying gray, my hair and body isn't color coordinated with the spray job.
