Preventing rust around jack points

My new (to me) '87 300TD wagon has some surface rust around the jack points. It wasn't obvious until I took the rubber plugs out - which made me wonder if the rubber plugs are a good thing or a bad thing.

After cleaning up the area and removing the rust - should I insert the plugs again? Or should I leave them out and let air dry the holes when they get wet?

I believe I read someone recommended using the plugs but then sealing the area around the plug to insure water doesn't enter the hole.

Thanks,

-John

Put grease in there. Then install plug. I spray lithium grease in there periodically. It seems to have really slowed the rust in that area

I understand the use of grease/oil to prevent rust in there, but it just does not sound wise to lube the connection of a hole designed to support the entire car on a pole...

The way the jack positions itself when you jack it up, it is impossible for it to slide. Its difficult to describe, but you should try it, and you will see the jack angles itself in such a way that it just wont happen.

I have done it many times.

wd is good, but doesnt seem to last more than a day or so. Wheel bearing grease, or lithium grease will hold up to the elements a while longer.

I call it a Dauber; like a ball of Cotton on a Wire stick but made of out of different material. They are often used to apply Leather Dye and such they are about 1/2"-3/4" in diameter.

Clean out the Hole and degrease it. Mask over the exterior Paint and stick the Dauber in POR 15 and coat the whole inside of the Hole.

Or go cheap and use the Rustoleum Primer. If you use the Rustoleum I after one coat dries a day or 2 I would apply another coat.

There is also that Rust Converter stuff; not the Jasco type but the one that is more for Body Work. It is UV light is supposed to be bad for it so it needs a top Coat but under the Rubber Plugs it should be safe from the Light.

If you use the Jack in the Holes you will have to re-coat the Holes inside.

Grease works but if you have to change a Tire in your good Clothing there is a chance of getting the Grease on them because when you pull the Jack out the shaft on the Jack is going to be greased.
At least I can almost guarantee that would happen to me.

I've never had a problem with the structural integrity of the tube itself, but the sheet metal around it gets sandblasted by road rash and starts to rust (at least on W124 without cladding). I have this issue on a 1987 300E. Tubes are rock solid but the rocker around them (3 of the 4) is rusting (being held at bay by POR15).

X2 => Geometrical lock

Rubber corks

I get them at the hardware store. They seal the jack holes better than the stock plug.

from what I have seen, the rust starts outside and when the integrity of the rocker is compromised it allows crud to settle in there.

Tube is securely attached to part of the internal structure. It looked like without the Rocker Panel even there it is safe to jack the Car.

My theory is that the rust starts from the tube, and travels outward. The tube is much thicker, which is why it doesnt rot out. The first time a jack is put in, it scrapes the paint, and starts the corrosion.

Thanks for chiming in army. I would have never thought of geometrical lock.
