grommets for bodyside mouldings: how to install without damaging new paint?

I am using the new, clear tube-style grommets for the bodyside mouldings on my w123, where I just painted the door and fender. They don't want to go in very easily -- and I don't see any immediate way to tap them in that wouldn't bring the danger of damaging the paint.

Anyone got any tips? How about if I put them in hot water to make them more pliable?

I much preferred the old style, the red ones that were sort of acorn-shaped. I was able to press them into place pretty easily after my w116 was painted.

Hot water is the trick I use with the old type. Can't see how it would hurt trying it with the new style..
