PPG Deltron vs Omni
 

My black (040) 1982 300sd is in the body shop for a complete repaint and I have a few questions that were posed to me by the painter.

First, he uses PPG products and told me that PPG's Omni line is less expensive than their Deltron line if I want to say a few dollars. I've read, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the Deltron line has more solids and hence covers better? Does this make it more fade resistant over the Omni line? I've also read that with a BC/CC the important thing is a high quality, high solids clear over the base. Is this true and is the PPG Deltron Clear a good, high solids clear?

So, with that being said and with the Omni line less expensive, will it hold up as long as the Deltron line? I understand it may take more of the Omni to cover the same amount of area, but what is most important to me is that the paint doesn't "fade out" in a few years. Or, is it the quality of the clear coat that I should be more concerned with?

Last question, has anyone used a paint code other than the Mercedes 040 black that matches?

For years, Deltron was PPG's top of the line refinish. Omni was not around when I worked there. From looking around, you would be better off with Deltron. From ones who have sprayed both and seemed to know what they were talking about. Omni has lower solids so you will use more paint, and it is harder to get good appearance. One comment was Omni was good for for farm equipment, but Omni required much more sanding to get the appearance up to automobile specs.

This is not from personal experience, but from looking on the net.

IMHO Omni would be false economy in this situation. The majority of the expense on your case is labor. I have only used Omni for economy repairs on less than stellar cars. I would not use it for a total refinish job.

My $0.02,

After I got to thinking about it, if you used the Omni for the base coat, but used the premium clear (I can't remember their buzzword for it) then you might be able to economize without compromising quality. I want to say the quality clear is called Legacy, but I know that's not right. If I come across it I'll post it later.

Well I looked at their website and they have changed the name since I used any. Deltron is now the buzzword for the top of the line stuff. I'm aging myself I guess.

Omni and Shopline are low end paints used for quick insurance / car lot repairs. I use it to paint equipment and such but it does take more liquid to cover. ( Be sure to use hardener )

For car use I'd only use it in solid colors and for better than nothing repairs.

There is only one black the world over. ( Slate metallic does not count as it is more dark gray not black. ) White on the other hand has a few shades.

Omni is crap. Deltron is top of the line. SHOPLINE is mid range. Thin the shopline 2:1 NOT 1:! as they say and it cover well.

IMHO for solid colors Shopline is fine, nd the color match is usually pretty close. it is NOT fine for metallics. Metallic color matches have been WAY
off in my experience
