Disassembly of floor pans
 

Hello everybody, this is actually my first post, I have 4 mercedes diesels, 3 of which are w123
I am currently in the process of replacing floor pans in my 1982 anthracite grey wagon, I'm in the disassembly phase and for whatever reason I'm stumped, I'm not sure how to take out the "upper pan" out on the front of my floor, it is thick and dosent appear to be steel, any pics and advice is appreciated, you can see the peice where your feet would be in the driver seat http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b0d889e8d7.jpg

Oh and my other question is, upon reassembly what do you use as a replacement for the interior rubber coating?

Currently going through there same thing with my W124 300TE.

Are you talking about the sound dampening material inside the car? I used a heat gun and a scraper to remove it on mine. It smells awful so make sure you have a fan going to get some fresh air into your workspace.

I'm planning on using dynamat as a replacement when I reassemble the car.

Dry ice and a little mallet action will make that tar/sound deadening come up in sheets very cleanly with no side effects

I went through similar thing with my 85 W123. I too used a heat gun and a scraper to remove the sound deadener. I didn't notice much of a smell. Maybe I didn't get it that hot. In stubborn areas, I used an electric scraper (multitool). Then solvent to get down to bare metal.

I coated new and existing floor metal with several coats of DOM16 (similar to POR-15 and Miraclecoat). I used a Dynamat like product on the tunnel and firewall, but not on the floors. I wanted to leave them so I could inspect by lifting the carpets. Not sure, but I think I added some underpadding to the bottom of the carpets to compensate.

jjfranky123 when you say "upper pan", I am not sure exactly what you mean. On my W123, there is just one layer of metal floor pan. However in places, it forms the top of the frame rails that run under the floor as part of the structure. The floor pan doe
is of course have a thick asphalt/rubber type sound deadener coating.

I have removed sound deadening in many cars. In the bitter cold of winter it chips up easily. I have never had an odor, so perhaps heat was too high. Removing secondary residue with thinner is effective.

Are you guys buying replacement pans or just patching in sheetmetal?

Be sure to address the root cause of the rust. Water got in some where.
