Become a mechanic or auto body repair tech???

Not sure if this is the right sub for this, but I'm sure many of you could answer this question. I'm planning on dropping out of college after I complete this year (might finish a degree later on in life), and get into trade school. My question is that should I become a mechanic or an auto body repair tech? For a bit of background, my father is a self-taught mechanic and has been working on cars since his early childhood. The man is a wizard at fixing cars - it's almost spooky. He's always wanted to open up his own shop, so with his years of experience in mechanical work and if I go for auto body repair, we could have plenty of groundwork to get started.

Back to the point, from what I hear auto body seems to pay more and be less back breaking. Also, regardless of what powers future cars, body panels, paint, etc, are always going to need fixing/replacing. As you can probably tell, I'm leaning towards auto body. However, I'd love to hear what you have to say.https://discord.software/ fetLife itunes

As a former auto shop teacher and school administrator I know that both auto/truck/heavy equipment technicians and auto body techs can earn a very good living. Each has a list of positives and each has a few drawbacks. With either, I would recommend that you seek ASE certification which provides extra assurance to your customers that you have been trained and passed exams in the latest techniques for repairing vehicles. Each also has a few health cautions such as asbestos or bondo dust but you will be taught how to avoid these issues. Good luck.

Do you feel more "comfortable" doing one versus the other? I'm not much on body other than swapping parts.

In my experience dealing with body shops, they are constantly trying to get through cars all the time--and can have difficulty keeping good help. If it's something you're serious about, there will be a definite need. Certifications a plus, and you could even additionally have the different car manufacturers' certifications (a local dealership can sponsor you).

Sounds like the father/son duo is a great idea. Just have both of you go through the ASE certifications minimum plus your schooling to make it more official. Also, it would make a great direct mail piece to have a photo of you and him, as prospects will instantly feel more comfortable and good about supporting you.

I am an auto body expert based on my knowledge. Having this ability is nothing to compare as long as you enjoy your work. Since your dad is an Auto Mechanic, now your opportunity is even to practice everything he has done. But I encourage you to finish your studies and have the degree linked to this ability.
