W123 Sun roof question

Got a problem with a 1978 W123 300CD sun roof. I want to repair it but need to figure out a way to get the danged thing open so I can pull the panel to diagnose the problem.

The motor runs and I can hear the cable moving in its housing. In order to diagnose whether the cable is simply un-clipped or broken I need to remove the headliner panel. Therein lies the rub. How can I release and manually slide the sun roof open if I can't get the locks on the roof to release?

Don't say, "Use the manual crank" because, obviously, the cable isn't connected to the slide mechanism.

Don't want to tear into the headliner (although it is in poor shape) to reach the locks unless it is absolutely necessary.

BFH? Gentle application of a thin pry-bar? What?

Never mind, I got it. A bit of gentle persuasion using a rubber mallet at the rear seam and a bit of prying using a plastic bar got it moved. Man, was it sticking. I bet it hasn't been opened in 10 or more years.

Appears to be just a problem of never being lubed and maybe a snapped cable.

Got my fingers crossed.

Are the sunroof cables for the W114 coupe and the W123 Coupe the same? I know the sedans and coupes are different lengths but wondering about the diameters.

I'm guessing. Seems the diameter of the tube and chain wouldn't change because the load differential on any of the bodies wouldn't be worth producing more than one product in different lengths.

I'd also guess that if the sunroof motors will swap that might indicate diameter sizes.

The diameters are the same. Same cables with the exception being the sedan has a longer end tube. The cable will work but it won't open the roof completely.

I think with a little "retro-engineering" the sedan cable can be adapted.
