What to watch for when replacing windshield
Have anyone had windshield replaced? Any special precautions or suggestions. I was quoted by one shop $148 and by the other $250 for replacement of a windshield. Why could be such a spread in pricing?
On my 85 380SE MB windshield there are some chips. One shop told me it can be fixed for about $70 but the marks can be still visible. Anyone had an experience with that? And the last question, does an original windshield have MB logo etched on? My windshield doesn't have any manufacture logo. |

My windshield was replaced 3 times... First time because I received a little stone on the road from a truck... It has been replaced, but I always heard a noise, like if it was not well fitted in on the driver's lower corner. One day some bubbles appeared there and suddenly the whole glass cracked... And well they replaced it for free as it had a 1year waranty... Again... some noise... but now coming from the other end, same senario... Anyway... When you have yours replaced, be sure not to hear any noise when driving... If you do, take it immediatly back and have it checked!

You will want a PPG or the Sigla brand glass. Be sure! Some call it the premium glass. It is the best and worth a little extra. It will not have the star on it unless it came in the car.

Iam told that Pilkington makes MB glass in the US and produces OEM windshields and replacementson the same line, changing only the etched info on the right lower corner. The same source says that there is so much money, and competition, in windshield replacement that operators are cutting prices drastically just to compete. I just replaced the windshield on an '89 300E for about $175, but two years ago I had to replace a windshield in a Honda Accord and the best price available was almost $400.
Some will say only glass from MB should be used, to protect resale value. Take this for what it may be worth. ------------------ |

Don't know much about the quality of various replacement windshields (you may wish to add Safelite to the list of shops to obtain a quote from - they offer a lifetime warranty and have shops everywhere), however I am told that there is little difference so long as you buy what is known as "solar tinted" glass.
You may be able to avoid adversely affecting resale value no matter what the source of the glass by replacing the "Mercedes Benz Product" sticker - with the G. Daimler signature - that is in the lower right-hand corner of the original windshield. They are available from M-B dealers for about $1.80. ------------------ BrianM '87 420SEL '71 250C |
