Painted Wheel Wells
A very clean 126 I'm looking at has paint in the rear wheel wells (the entire wheel well). It matches the color of the car, and the dealer (mercedes) tells me that when they originally undercoat these cars, they use a plasticizer stuff that matches the color.
My concern was that this was actually overspray from a repair as I don't recall seeing colorful wheel wells, unless they are just too dirty nowdays to see it. I've only seen a photo of this car so I don't know if all the wells have this. So, is this a real story, or is it overspray? Thanks! |

Yes, I have two all original cars 1986 + W126 that both have paint in wheelwells. Not sure about 1985 and down W126.

my 1980 w123 230 sedan has all body color wheel wheels and under body, except where the sprayer missed.

Mine too
I can’t speak for the W126, but on my '80 W123 it’s like you’re seeing it. I’m the original owner of the car, and know for a fact that it’s never been to any body repair shop. My wheel wells are kept clean, and their color matches that of the rest of the car. My data card calls out 524 “Paint Coat Preservation” and paint code 623 “Gulf States Version”. The wheel wells are coated with a not too smooth layer of something, that’s for sure. And, it’s the exact color of the rest of the car when clean.

thats awesome that you are the original owner...
i wish i could be, but seeing that my car is a month younger than me - that would have been a little hard. Jake |

Yup...
Bought my w126 new in '87 and the wheel wells are "painted" the body color, with no clear coat, of course.
