Hey fellow benz owners i need some opinions here!
I have a silver 83 300D. The paint is faded and oxidized on the hood. It had been repainted long ago the previous owner told me, but poorly. The rest of the cars' paint is good. I saw a 79 300 (same color) with a very rough body and interior but a VGL hood and grill being sold. The seller is willing to let me switch the hoods between mine and the 79. The 79 lacks that insulation on the underside, and looks as if it never had any. My question is, would it be easy for two people to replace the two hoods, im starting to have doubts, and can i put insulation on the underside of the 79 hood later on? Im thinking of this angle because i feel just repainting my hood would be costly and or look different from the paint on the rest of the vehicle. Please respond with comments and opinions!!! Thanks. Brett,
While I am not familiar with the models of all years, this reply assumes that both cars are of the 123 body style. I have the MB book describing how to remove, install and adjust the hood. There are brief instructions with pictures. It appears to be relatively easy if there are two men working on it. It only takes one page to describe removal with installation being the inverse. The second page describes adjustment after installation. If you are interested in pursuing this route, I will send you copies of these two pages either by e-mail or snail mail, as you wish. ------------------ Ted 1979 240D 160,000 miles |

jeepguy,
Go for it! Place some fender covers, old blankets, anything you can find around the fender and cowl when removing and replacing hoods. It's easy to slip and scratch paint everywhere. The color consistency from one car to the next on a Benz is quite impressive, so you should not have a color mismatch. The insulation pad is available for about fifty bucks. Also, I removed and replaced a hood one time and it seemed easier to do with two people and the hood in the full upright position, rather than the partially opened, oil check position. Good luck with it, ------------------ Larry Bible '84 Euro 240D, 523K miles '88 300E 5 Speed '81 300D Daughter's Car Over 800,000 miles in Mercedes automobiles [This message has been edited by LarryBible (edited 08-14-2000).] |

If you could somehow e-mail be the info on the hood removal, it would be most helpful and appreciated. Thanks again! Brett |
