To those of you like PC Dave who have suggested possible replacements for my flood-damaged SD, thank you. We found a one-owner car, an '86 300 SDL. It's in beautiful shape--I don't think the PO even pushed any of the buttons. Plus, we got to have our mechanic look at it before buying, and he gave it his blessing. We're pretty happy now...

Thanks again, everyone!

Also in Marin County No. of San Francisco...

I'm a new owner of an old M-B diesel [ 1980 240D ] and have also helped push my Son into investing an a 1980 300D. We are extremely happy with a small independent shop here in Novato, CA:
Karl's Mercedes Service
19L Hamilton Dr.
Novato, CA 94949
415-883-3937
Karl has had his shop for ~35+ years and he too does not like to throw parts at his customer's cars unless absolutely necessary. He really likes the diesel models but will work on just about any MBZ. He expects to ad some new test equipment soon that will enable him to more effectively service the older diesels by checking their injection pump timing.
Great guy, I often have coffee with him up town in the morning!

A new independent MBZ shop in San Rafael…

They have their “Grand Opening” this coming Thursday I think. Check out their WebSite [ undergoing changes soon] at:

Darren Collie has been well trained by way of formal MBZ courses and worked at R.A.B for years. His wife "Denise" runs the office. His shop was immaculate whenever I went by and I think he will be a refreshing asset to us MBZ owners here in Marin.
Check him out at:

Thumbs up Great shop in bay area

Hi,
I have been looking for a good Mercedes mechanic for 2 years now and finally found one. I live in Campbell, Ca and AutoSource Motoring Service Center opened In Los Gatos, Ca so the shop is very convenient. They have very knowledgeable techs with 25+ years dealer experience on Mercedes. They also service and repair most other makes and models of high line cars. Price was always under the local dealers by a mile and their staff was very welcoming. I was a first time customer and now I am a loyal customer. It's always nice to find a great local shop! Just thought I would share my 2cents.

Thanks,
Benzowner

Best Mechanic

I had posted this in the west LA thread but thought this thread was better.

Part of the criteria for a good mechanic is that it is hard to spend money with them or at least feels as that is the case. They should never suggest frivolous work yet stay ahead of the necessary maintenance. They should know clearly the dividing line between what they should already know versus what is the next step is to a problem solution. They should never guess and just throw parts at a unknown solution. On one hand telling everyone about a great service shop can make it harder to fit into a ever tightening schedual but part of the criteria once again is managing expectations so still getting great service independent of the work load is also necessary. When you get great service tell him Duncan said Hi.

I wanted to add my vote for Hamel at Marina Benz in Marina Del Rey as trustworthy and able to correctly solve problems even obscure ones. He has done so several times for my 85 300TD when no one else even had a clue. Rabbit out of a hat doesn't begin to describe it. I was going to give up on an otherwise great car. He is Mercedes factory certified and been working on MB exclusivley for 30 years. Every time I'm there there seems to be a steady stream of loyal customers who come by all of whom swear by his service.

I drove from San Francisco for my latest needs with the added bonus of a very fair price for reliable work. He's the best!

I had previousl thought driving from San Francisco to Mountain View was a lot for my Porsche mechanic but Tony Heyer at Heyer Performance is the best my 85 911SC and if I lived in down in southern California I'd drive north for anything beyond simple maintenance.

So...is Tony Heyer great for Mecedes repair?

Hi and thanks for your post. I have moved to the Bay Area from Southern Ca, and miss my Fantastic mechanic in LA....Great guy if you need one. Used to work as a Mercedes mechanic and now works out of his home as he has a "real job" during the week. Does excellent work.
Anyway, I'm looking for a mechanic up here. I had a minor problem a few weeks ago when my car was leaking oil. I randomly called shops and was shocked at what they wanted just to Look!...got the problem fixed, which wasn't a problem...anyway, if you think Tony Heyer is great with Mercedes 300D's let me know.
Thanks again,
lindajane

Marx Mercedes - Costa Mesa, Orange County, CA

Marx Servicing Mercedes

An ASCA shop - and noted 'SL' expert. I found five Gullwing model SL cars in the shop when I took my SD in for service. Knowledgeable is an understatement.

After reading your recommendiation of Stephens Mercedes, I decided to give him a try. My '97 E320 was at Sacramento Mercedes-Benz because it ran rough and the check engine light was on. They wanted $2600 to fix it. I read your experiance with Stephens, and called him. He sounded like he knew what the problem was, so I pulled the car out of MB of Sac and let Stephens take a look. I must say, I was impressed right from the start. His shop is very nice. It makes you feel like you are in Germany. Everything is first class. Stephens explained more then the dealer did about the problem. It seems a spark plug worked loose and damaged the threads in the cylinder head. Stephens gave me an estimate that was $2000 less then MB of Sac. He fixed it in one day and it runs fine. Thanks for the recommendiation. Reading this website and Stephens Mercedes saved me $2000.

Great MB mechanic in Orange County

I've been taking my Mercedes cars to this place for 20 years! Ron knows Mercedes like nobody else in the area. His service is not very cheap, but he is very honest, he'll never sell you something you do not need.
Tell him that Michael, the real estate guy, sent you. You'll not be disappointed.
