Hey folks - I really know nothing about mercedes, but a family friend is selling a 1982 300sd Turbo Diesel that seems incredible, but to protect us both I'd like to get it checked out before buying.

Right now, my plan is to go to Baldwin's German Auto Werks, where the car has been serviced for many years (owner has all service records for life of car). Does anyone have any input on this shop, or perhaps a recommendation of another one?

If you don't find anyone in LA you can cross the line into MS. Very quality shop in Richland Benz Only
If your engine bay is dirty he won't let you in the shop

. That's his only quirk though

the closest shop and best in the area would be Silver Star Motors in Carmichael. They are right off Fair Oaks Blvd. I can look up their number if you need it. Ask for John. he is the owner, and best MB mech in our area.

Thank you. I saw their address in another post. I will pass this info on to my son-in-law. I sold him my 190E 2.6 for their daughter and I want o make sure that they have a great mechanic available.

John at Silver Star is indeed very good, but closer options are Chris Weisensee at Capital European or Tom Stephens at Stephens Service Center.

Chris' shop is just off Folsom at about 34th and Tom's shop is up by Sutter General Hospital (the old one).

Can anyone in Orange County tell me if Bruce Strauss Autocare (by John Wayne) is still a premiere shop in that area or if anything about it has changed within the last 5 years or so? I'm looking for a good shop to service my son's car. He lives in Irvine and Strauss is very convenient to him.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's ten days after your post. Has your friend sold the 300SD? Were you the prospective buyer, or are you just helping? My wife and I lost an '85 in the New Year's floods and are looking for a replacement. If it's nice, and still available, please let me know.
