Recommendation Please, Honest MB Diesel Mechanic in San Diego, CA.

Hi everyone, I am a Newbie to your group but not to Diesels. I just purchased my first MB, a 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD. I have always loved this W126 body style and the durablilty of the Mercedes Benz Diesel. It runs great, has 316k miles, Odometer just broke, oh well. A few leaks but nothing serious. I need a recommendation for an Honest MB Diesel shop - Mechanic here in San Diego, California. Any reviews, ideas? I use Jerry Tuckers All Import Service at 858-573-1118 however he only works on Japanese automobiles, so I need a Diesel Mechanic to check out the 300SD. I also need a spare tire and wheel, it doesn't have one. Any ideas, I don't really have room or space for a parts car. Thank you very much.

Welcome, you chose a great model for a MB diesel

About the spare wheel, that's a GOOD idea to have. Any foreign recycler should have a good Bundt style wheel to match those on your car. Either with tread on it, or get a used tire and have it mounted balanced, or a new tire on it if that's your fancy.

There may be problems on the way, but you wil really enjoy driving one of these cars, they are not like gas cars but you do get used to them.

I looked, but no San Diego specific shop.

Hi, Thanks very much, I checked out the thread but unless I am missing something I did not see anything relating to a recommended Honest Mechanic in San Diego. Thanks anyways.

Exclusive Motors

I received a recomendation for Pat Petrovic at Exclusive Motors on Miracrest Place. Seems like a good guy. Very knowledgeable, and charged me less than the original quote.

MBZ in OB

Welcome!

I bought a wrecked car from a guy who said that there is a terrific MBZ mechanic in Ocean Beach. I'll see what I can find out for you.

I have finally found an MB mechanic that I really trust and have been going to him for several years. I have tried a lot of them in this town and most want to rebuild your car to new condition when you come in.

He does not do that and in fact has told me several times "you do not need that, you would be wasting your money" when I asked about doing something to my cars.

His name and address are as follows;

Alain Gillot
1625 Coolidge Avenue
National City, CA 91950
619-318-8227

He will repair parts when possible and replace parts only when absolutely necessary. No parts swapping to find the problem, he is very knowledgeable and will find what is wrong.

He is a very quiet man but when he tells me that something needs fixing, I can be sure that it is true.

The bad part is that his shop is in a location where the easiest non-vehicular access is the San Diego trolley.

He will take you to the trolley station and pick you up there but he does not have a loaner car.

I guess you could call Enterprise and have them bring you a car if you needed a vehicle and did not have someone to take you home and bring you back.

I take the trolley because I have been burned way too many times by shops that start swapping parts until the problem goes away or tell me I need something that I do not need.

In the early days, I trusted mechanics but learned the hard way that many are only after easy money. Now, I do not have to worry about that.

Maybe, but not when I took my car to him. He managed to f*@k up my ABS sensors when changing out the lower ball joints and didn't even offer to repair/replace them. Also screwed up a brake caliper (started leaking) and tried to charge me for new pads ... the car wasn't even in for brake service.

Not too impressed.

I recommend (the controversial)

DIETER FISCHER'S MERCEDES SVC
8699 LA MESA BLVD
LA MESA
91941-3903
(619) 460-1498

You can check out my detailed analyses of Dieter's shop along with several other recommendations in the thread titled: "San Diego, CA" in the "Best CA Shops" thread list. Go in for an oil change and have him check out your car.
