Other possible shops in (Northern) California.

International Automotive Technicians' Network; iATN Repair Shop Finder.

http://www.iatn.net/shopfinder/

Bosch Authorized Automotive Service.

http://www.boschservice.com/FindSvcCenter/Pages/FindingaServiceCenter.aspx

All sponsor members of iATN agree to an ethical code of conduct as part of our obligation to our customers.
There is however still the need to check locally on a shop for references.

Not all those listed are service shops...some are VoTech's and other specialized businesses.
The list now covers the whole world and every continent.

Need to bookmark this if your are traveling out of your home area.
Those highlighted in 'blue' are sponsor members.

Finding a competent auto technician need not be a matter of chance. Much of the guesswork has been eliminated, thanks to national program conducted by the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

I've had stunning help at German Auto Service (Roseville, CA). JJ (Owners son) does fantastic diesel work, and is generous with the advice.

Smile Sal's ******** in San Francisco

I've had some great experiences with Sal. He's honest, upfront, and won't let you embark down the path of repairing what's too expensive to be worth fixing.

Great guy. Great service...

On the Northcoast

Up in Redwood country (Eureka and environs), I can highly recommend Specialty Foreign Auto in McKinleyville. Owner Craig Lemster is a MB Certified Master Tech who did his early training at dealerships in L.A. and eventually left the rat race to come north. Craig is a wonderful gentleman, with an infectious enthusiasm for his work, in addition to being old enough to have been trained in real diagnostic techniques and not just a parts changer. He owns a fully-restored 190SL, complete with matching luggage and concourse awards to show for his work. I have no connection there, other than as an enthusiastic customer.

What's up with Sal, has he changed ownership or is he letting the kids run the place. I've called them a few times and they either don't get back to me, or totally misquote jobs, or don't seem to know what the heck they are talking about. The first time I went there, a few years ago, they were prompt, courtesy, aware and knowledgeable. Since then, I've lost all confidence in them and would not take my vehicle in to their shop. Anyone know if there were some major changes at that shop in the last couple years?

Same here, seems very nice, but could not talk to a responsible person.

As I'll be moving to a warmer part of NorCal later this year, it's time to take a serious look at getting my A/C working. I had Petes Mercedes (in SF) take a look a few years ago and they simply said that the entire system needed to be redone - approx $1,800. So, I'm left with either trying to get up to speed in order to do a DIY (but reallly don't have the time) or trying to find a NorCal indy shop that can help at a more reasonable price. Does anyone here have experience with A/C shops in the Bay area that they can recommend?

I have a new-to-me 1970 250 that has some itinerant Zeniths. Anyone in norcal (I live in SF) area recommended for breathing on MB carbs? I am also considering a full swap to Weber life, but not sure about that yet. A competent MB mechanic in the area would be a good contact, this is my first one.

Thanks in advance.

Red face W140 - 98CL 500

Looking for a Merc shop in the Santa Cruz area.

Have a bad consistent miss that the OBD11 error code reader indicates as
1)intermittent miss
2) CYLDR 3
3) CYLDR 7
4) L Bank pre-cat Oxy sensor
5) Post cat Oxy sensor

I replaced all three Oxy sensors but miss wasn't corrected.

The OBD11 doesn't indicate problems with fuel injectors, and the plugs don't looked fouled nor wet with gasoline, but I suspect them.

Is the OBD11 information less reliable or incomplete compared to what is available thru the Mercedes diagnostic port? Is it worth taking to a stealership or independent wrench to get diagnosed thru the Mercedes software? Is there a computer program which can emulate the Merc software and be read by a shade tree like myself?

I keep reading horror stories on the web about how expensive the W140s have become both in parts and service - particularly since the service info is so hard to come by. (I do have the last version of the official Mercedes CD, but it is not as helpful as I hoped).

Baring that, is/are there a good independent shop(s) in the Santa Cruz/ Monterey area that can be trusted? Money is an object.

This is my second W140 - the first a 92 500SEL got me to 405,000mi before the list of fixes and their corrective cost had me pick up this CL, which "only" has 145k mi on it.

Some of the other merc forums have weeping and gnashing of teeth as to how expensive these cars have become. All advice and comments cheerfully solicited and appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
