Thumbs up San Diego, Ca

I recommend (the controversial)

DIETER FISCHER'S MERCEDES SVC
8699 LA MESA BLVD
LA MESA
91941-3903
(619) 460-1498

Over the years, budget-conscious MBZ people have tried to dissuade me from using Dieter's shop, saying that he "Wants to rebuild the whole damn car and charges a fortune to do it!" These are the same people who advise me to go to Mexico to have a tranny rebuilt for $500.

In the beginning, I used to get second or even third opinions before having Dieter fix something, but always found that his diagnosis was correct, and priced reasonably. He also gave me the option to use 'used' parts if I wanted them.

If you go in and ask Dieter to do a pre-purchase inspection of a car, you can expect to pay around $200, and you'll probably get a 2 page list, but you'll be aware of every marginal part on your car. You just need to ask him, "OK, Dieter, now what REALLY needs to be done, what is important?" He was always honest with me, and only fixed what was necessary.

Once Dieter started servicing my cars, I never had any of my old MBZ break down or leave me stranded, and the cars always were returned from service washed & clean, generally same day or next day at most. He provides loaner cars to regular customers, as well.

If you know enough about cars to use his checklist as reference, and just fix what is needed, it is worth going to Dieter at least for an oil change and to ask his opinion of your car...Also, to check how honest and knowledgeable your present mechanic is. Dieter knows diesels, and can troubleshoot and fine-tune your vintage Mercedes without using guesswork or needlessly replacing parts to find the problem.

Presently, I'm driving an Alfa Romeo, but ln the past, I have owned many Mercedes Benz including a 450SEL, two 280SE/SELs, a 230SL and a 450SL, and am now looking for a pristine low mileage 300SD. if I ever find a good diesel, it will be serviced by Dieter, even though he is about an hour's drive from my home.

Other local shops with good reputations are:

Rudi's ********, B&M Auto, and Exclusive Motors in San Diego, Charlie's Foreign Car/Encinitas German in Encinitas, and Carlsbad Independent Mercedes &Volvo Service in Carlsbad. I haven't taken a Mercedes to any of these for more than an oil change, but heard from others that they are good shops.

Dieter Fischer

I, too, use Dieter's shop and second KayGotz' obersvations and conclusions re Dieter to the letter. My classic Mercedes run better after a going over by Dieter than they have after years of dealer service. I, too, live and am willing to drive from an hour away to get such service.

Rumor's of Dieter's demise are unfounded

Rumors regarding the death of Dieter Fischer of Dieter's Mercedes Service in La Mesa are in error. The Dieter who passed away last month is Dieter Vongehr of Dieter's Independent Porsche, BMW & Mercedes on Market Street in San Diego.

Dieter Fischer is alive and well. RIP Dieter Vongehr, whom I was not acquainted with.
