You need a toothed belt. There are only smooth and toothed.
BTW, I don't like the "new looks" of the board.

Check by unscrewing the antenna lock ring off and seeing if you have the toothed plastic or smooth plastic to run the antenna up and down. If it's the smooth length does not matter, if it has toothed plastic then you have only one to choose from. It's the easiest install, takes justa couple of minutes at most. The plastic wrapper will have the install directions, I read them 3 times. I couldn't believe it was so simple to install.

Lightbulb

BE SURE to hold the section of the mast housing, inside, where the antenna cable connects, with a wrench or pliers. If it turns, your antenna cable may break off and they are virtually impossible to repair or replace. Don't ask me how I know!

I hate to say this, but here goes.

If you can not tell the difference between smooth plastic & tooth plastic part, what are you doing working on the car? One is smooth round long coiling piece of plastic and the other has gear type teeth on the long plastic piece.

Above is my first post, read it again. Your antenna is metal the internal part we are talking about is plastic and may be white.

Hmmm

All the 300SD I have worked on had the mast with teeth.
Unless they ran it through a car wash with the antenna up, and plugged an aftermarket manual antenna in place of the power unit.

well i got it in. but it doesnt go down all the way. it stays sticking up at 3 in. thats as far don as it will go. when i turn on the radio it only goes up about 3/4 the length of the antenna. but when i hit the switch it goes all the way up. *shruggs* atleast its safer than when the whole thing stuck up

It is supposed to retract the entire way. You may not have fed it in quickly enough.
It is only supposed to go up 3/4 of the way when the radio is turned on.
