Becker Radio Removal and Troubleshooting

I just bought an 88 300E with a Becker Grand Prix radio/cassette. All driver side speakers do not work. ONly the passenger side works. The balance function in the unit works fine. YOu can hear it going from left to right. ONly left is quiet. It sounds like maybe the driver side wire is disconnected. Any help with the problem would be appreciated. Also how do you remove the radio to get to the wires in the back.

Thanks

Often, the wires take a beating from the door opening and closing. If possible, try to inspect the wiring where it enters the door. The breaks may be inside the insulation and not readily apparent.

If your radio is like mine, it may have two slots where you insert a tool set to extract the radio. These tools are available from Fastlane (on top of this page) or from e-Bay for $10-$15. If you're a resourceful cheapass like me, these tools can be made from sheetmetal.

The radio tools won't help in that year car as the center wood has to come out first then the ashtray and then the radio will come out. With the whole channel being out the first thing to check is the fader control to make sure it is plugged in all the way. (push down on the wood around the fader control. If this isn't the problem then you need to get the deck out and check the speaker connection at the back of the radio. There isn't an amplifier in the stock system till 1991 in the 124 car.

Scott: Thanks for your help it was the fader control unit. I pulled it out and set it back in place and with a little fooling with it I got all speakers to work. It fits in loose so I think I need a new one as when I go over bumps it will probably revert back to one channel.
