antenna malfunction on 450SL

undefined

My '79 450SL radio antenna goes up and down sporadically. I have sprayed it with WD-40 several times and it works temporarily. Any suggestions?

This helped on mine

I have a 1995 E420, and my antenna did the same thing, then finally crapped out completely.

I removed the unit from the car (easy on mine - I unplugged 3 connections and removed 1 screw), and then disassembled the antenna unit itself. I was amazed at how simple the mechanism is. Basically, a worm gear connected to a small motor drives a spool that retracts / extends the plastic strip that goes into the metal antenna.

My antenna's problem was with the bracket holding the worm gear - the metal end that holds the gear in place broke. i used some JB Weld (epoxy) to make the part whole again, thoroughly cleaned the entire unit, re-lubricated with Mercedes sunroof lube (silicone), and reassembled and installed.

It was only 3 weeks ago, but the antenna has worked fine.

Oh - I also lubed the antenna itself (when fully extended) with tranny fluid.

Don't be scared to fiddle with the antenna mechanism - it's simple to take apart and put back together (at least on mine). it can't be that different across the years.

Best of luck,
Troy

Troy,

That's just terrific. Thanks so much. But what is tranny fluid? By the way do you know a good reliable mechanic? You can email me at donald372005@yahoo.com as well.

Donald,

Tranny fluid is transmission fluid.

My mechanic is in Kensington, MD. Mitch Carr's auto service, a Mercedes-only independent. They are the absolute best. They did my evaporator repair for me, for less than I thought, and did a superb job.

The shop is a mile from a Metro (they can drive you there) and a few blocks from the MARC train (takes you to Union Station).

Talk to Hal - he's the General manager. (301) 493-9460

If your antenna motor runs, but the antenna does not extend or retract, you probably need a new antenna mast. The plastic belt gets worn and abraded over time and slips on the drive. Or gets splintered and jams. Some belts have teeth, some are smooth. Make sure the replacement is the correct type. Easy fix. Extend antenna, loosen retainer nut at bottom of mast, pull mast out. Insert new mast, tighten nut, turn off radio to retract antenna. If that does not work, you might have to remove and disassemble motor assy to find problem.

Another option. If you don't really need a retractable antenna, just disconnect the electrical power connector at the motor when the antenna is extended. That way the antenna will always stay up (assuming that the belt is not broken.) Leave the signal cable attached, of course.
