300E W124 Replacing Antenna, Not Automatic
I am interested in replacing my blown OEM antenna with either a plain whip antenna or an amplified, concealed antenna. I am aware that there is power running to the original antenna, which I could tap into for the amplifier on the concealed antenna. Regardless of which type of antenna I go with, will I have to run the new cable all the way to the front behind my head unit? Or can I somehow just "cut" the existing antenna cable and splice into it with the new antenna? For instance, is there some sort of female end adapter I could put on the existing antenna cable after I cut and separate it from the OEM antenna, enabling me to just plug the male end of the new antenna into it?

Hello again, alternatively, I was wondering if there is a way I can apply power to the antenna (perhaps with jumper wires?) in order to have it power up and extend the antenna, then disconnect power and leave the antenna in the upright position? This way, I could at least get a radio signal even if I don't have automatic up/down capability.
Thanks. |
Sorry no one has replied to your questions. I'm not familiar with the OEM unit in your car, but it's probably a Hirschmannn? If so, do a search and there is lots of info on removal, replacement, and renewing these fine old units right here in this forum.
If you can get it to power up, then it's worth restoring. |
most likely the relay inside the antenna has fried.
If you want, you should be able to pry open the antenna housing, and directly jump the motor. I did that on my car before whent he relay was bad, I ended up finding a good used antenna for cheap. You can also buy a hirschman universal antenna and install it and it will work fine, but I prefer the oem unit. The cable fromt he antenna could be spliced with the other antenna, but I don;t recommend it, as it can cause reception problems in some cases. I would check around and try toget a good used working antenna. Much better than going with a whip or concealed unit. You can remove the antenna fromt he car, then open it up and see the wires for jumping the motor. Regards, Alon |
