Phone Displaying
94 S class
Suddenly while driving along with the radio playing the radio will cut out and display the word PHONE. The only way I can get it to play again is by shutting off and restarting the car. Doesn't do it all the time just enough to be annoying. How can I correct this? |

Do you have a phone in the car? Usually that only came on when you are using the factory phone and it mute the music.

Im having a similar problem!
1994 SL500. My radio is inoperative.
Symptoms: On starting the car, radio display toggles between 89.9 (my current listen) and "Phone" approximately every 1/2 second. Antenna mast does not rise. Bose Woofer amp has audible relay click every time the display toggles. Other points: I’m not sure of the car had a factory phone. The center consol above the vents has a fuzzy-lined box, but there is a hole (poorly) punched in the back. Underneath the passenger side carpet, there is CB type antenna cord/connector that is just floating around unconnected to anything. There is also a ground wire, connected to a lug that is cut. The antenna motor is not trying to run. It behaves as if it is not being commanded to raise. My thoughts: The radio is getting a false signal to switch to phone mode? The antenna is stuck, making the radio confused? The problem happened a few times - then cleared. I cleaned the antenna (dry, thinking that was the problem) it worked for a few days then went totally inop. |

If you have the factory phone from 1994, most likely it's analog phone made by Oki. You could do a few things but I am not sure which is better for you. Mikbox or bluetooth unit like the Motorola or the Parrot. However, you could also get a portable navigation with bluetooth built in. Like the Tom Tom or others.

If there is a hole in the back of the box on the dash there was a factory OKI installed at one time, you should find renants of it in the bin under the console arm rest. This has been removed by the previous owner. The previoux s owner also must have re-routed the antenna cable from the rear fender to under the carpet. I would remove the drivers side tail light housing, it swivels, and unplug the connector by sliding the lock. I would take out the finder liner, the phone was attached to one of the fender webs and has some foam covering. The previous owner probably used the splitter that is attached to the antenna for his install or not.I would then remove the remnants of the old system, black thing the sise of a caton of cigarettes, and pull the fuse in trunk for phone. The phone would blank out the radio screen when the phone was taken out of the cradle or it rang. there is a multi connector for the phone, two wires that sent the phone audio to the two outbaard dash speakers, there was a lead that would raise the antenna if the phone was on, and a mute lead that would act on the radio. In 96 and up the fender antenna was only used for the phone (on glass and bumper mounted AM/FM) the cable should be shorting causing the radio to act up. There is no way to interface anything, even if you had the remanants of the old install

real simple, pull the radio. and look for a yellow wire with a black stripe on it in the bottom most plug harness. that is the cellular mute wire. if you cut it, it will not display phone.
