Thumbs up W126s w/ larger rear speakers (from factory in rear deck?)

What year did MB go to the larger speaker from the 4x6 to 5" round or what size in the rear fill? 1986 or so I'd assume.

Reason being, I'm wondering how hard of a swap it would be to install that later model rear fill into my '85 to have larger opening to run those bigger speakers.

I would think it'd be a bit of a pain in the rear. You'd have to swap out the back deck completely. IMO you're better off just to modify the storage compartments for some 6x9s and go from there.

I use my storage compartments for the Medic kit and other bits, so no dice there.

How hard can it be I'd assume the rear seat must come out? Mine is in poor shape so I plan to replace it regardless...

should be really easy to do....its not much to pull out the rear deck, if you have a little patience...your only problem might be finding a decent donor deck to put in....ive been half assed trying to find one for about a year now, its not really a priority though....but i dont see any reason why you cant just swap em out

Sweet! I found a donor car that has one, I just need to nab it.

BTW - your 126 is the same color in and out as mine.

Well, taking out/changing the fibreboard rear deck panel is straight forward enough, but underneath it, there is the steel deck that has been stamped to accomodate those smaller speakers. I'm not sure that you won't have to do some sheet metal trimming to fit the larger speakers.
Also, and this is just my opinion, there are quite few choices in a 4" X 6" speaker these days that drop right in and will sound every bit as good as a 5". Do a search to get some makes and model numbers that you can try locally. Without any sort of enclosure built into the rear deck for either size speaker, you're not going to achieve significant sound quality gains no matter what you do.
The drill to remove the deck panel is (after removing speaker grilles and speakers, and both storage compartment tray catches, 1 screw each): remove the bottom seat cushion (2 clips visible in the front of the cushion, red I think. Push down on each and pull the cushion up then out), remove the rear seat back (2 10mm bolts at each end, maybe a third in the center, then lift up to release from hooks), release the 2 side curtain panels (clipped in, wiggle up and toward front)(no need to remove, just loosen so the edges of the deck panel aren't wedged in), then pull the panel forward and out. (I may have omitted a detail or 2, this is just from memory)

I thought they used spacers to hold the larger speakers up?

Also - I plan to use that space to stuff ~6.5" speaker in there if that's possible.
