Becker Radio in 1987 Mercedes 560 SEL

I have recently had a problem with my Becker cassette radio. I am only getting sound out of the left speakers. I checked out the rear amplifers under the rear seat & they checked out ok. I also checked out the fader switch connections & seem to be ok. Sincerely,Steve

Becker Radio

Might look on the back of the radio and verify that both left and right channel connections are inserted all the way. If yes...then swap the two to see if the if the same side is still out - if not and now the opposite side is out - it could be the output transistors in the radio - or the drivers to the output transistors still inside the radio....I have a Becker in my 1986 420SEL - if you get me the model I might be able to provide a schematic. Becker is a difficult company to deal with....

My suggestion. Why not take this opportunity to install a new CD player? I removed my Becker radio cassette from my 87 560SEL years ago.

$100 will get you a new CD player that is 10x better then the old Beckers. If you really want good sound add another $100-$200 for 4 new speakers.

I am running a middle of the road Pioneer head unit with the best Pioneer speakers I can run without an amp. Whole setup cost me $350, and it sounds very, very good. About as good as 4 speakers is going to sound and better then most new cars.

Yes, a new CD player is a good suggestion but it still does not help with what the initial problem is. If it is in the speakers or amp. then it won't help to swap out head units.

Similar problem with tapes only...

Hi.

is it happening only with cassettes or with the radio too? in my case the radio is fine but the tpae player has had it...the heads get worn and dirty...maybe cleaning them will help...in my case the sound would go in and out when playing tapes...very annoying...I bought an adapter to use CD's (and now Ipod) through the stock Becker and it works well...I will eventually upgrade speakers at least and may change the head unit...but I am torn because it (Becker) simply fits these cars so well.

good luck.
