Are Benzi Box universal for each manufacturer?
My '88 300SE is getting tired and may only be with me for another 1-2 years. But the stereo is driving me mad. The original (and last) owner had the factory unit replaced with an Alpine unit installed in a Bezi Box. It's a cassette player and for the last 6 months, when you turn the volume all the speaker crackle! You have to keep tapping the volume cotrol and eveltually all 4 speakers sound fine. Drives me nuts and I hate the persoal cd player-plugged into a cassette adapter to play CDs. My thoughts are to get a set of decent rear speakers (originals are in there now) that will fit the rear openings and then a new Alpine CD unit.
So, my question is this: if I buy an Alpine unit, can I re-use the currently installed Benzi Box? Let me know because I don't want anyone messing with the installation if I can avoid it. Thanks, Ron Brooks

I doubt you could use the same sleeve that's in there now. Every one I have ever seen has had different contact-pin configuraions. You CAN probably fix the speaker crackling problem... pull the radio out, pop the cover off, and spray some contact cleaner (available at Radio Shack) on the potentiometer for the volume. Work the pot back and forth as you spray, and the static will likely go away. Then you could buy yourself one of those FM-modulated CD changers for the trunk (about $100) and just use your current radio. Chris

A temporary fix - rotate the volume knob bank & forth a few times -- this will many times remove some of the dirt buildup.

Thanks for the replies. I tried the spray but it didn't work for me. My wife found a receiver and 6x9s which together were only about $200 so I'll install them when they arrive. At least for as long as I have my 300SE I'll have sweet music again.
