I'm frustrated! I installed an in-dash receiver myself, and the unit is snug in the console. It sounds great - that is as long as I'm not rolling. On a cold morning while driving to work (approx 13 mi), it may skip 10 times - that's terrible. It's worse at highway speeds, or when it's cold outside. The Alpine book says if it skips, it's installed improperly. Maybe I missed something. My car is an 83 300D. I tried to smooth the ride by lowering the tire pressure. All suggestions welcome and thanks in advance for your help.

Lowering tire pressure to ease CD skipping. That is the first time I have heard that one.
The likely cause is a bouncing head unit. Make sure that the back end of the unit is secure. They all have a stud or threaded hole to accept a securing strap on the back. If you can't connect it due to space limitations (as most can't), pack a little foam around the back end of the unit to secure it. Don't cover the whole thing, or else it won't be able to stay cool. I am assuming that the unit is new. If my suggestions don't help, return it for another unit. I have an Alpine (CDA-7940) in my car and it has NEVER skipped in 2 years. |

Thanks Q - that's good advice. Yes, the unit is brand new. I'll find a way to stabalize the back-end of the unit. If that doesn't fix it - I'll return it. 'Preciate your help. P.S. lowering tire pressure was silly wasn't it.

Not really. I just thought it was creative. Kind of like having your buddy lean on one side of the car to pool the gas in the tank if you just ran out.

My trunk mounted Alpine changer skips if I hit a bad bump. (In Pennsylvania we have many many potholes, cracks, and frost heaved roads.) I think it's skipped maybe 15 times in the last year. Is that a lot? I think I might need some rear suspension work at some time (shocks, what else I might know this weeek when they look at it for state inspection.)

Definately look into strapping that radio down. I myself have never had a skipping problem with a head unit, as I never use in dash cd's, always changers in the trunk. Currently mine skips sometimes when I take a left turn hard.
Its probably just something bouncing in the trunk off my changer. Of course the best way to ensure you don't get skipping, is to make sure that radio won't move at all except with the car. strap it down, do what you have to do. alpine has always been excellent for not skipping. If yours is skipping still after strapping it or securing it so it doesnt move at all, then you should look into getting it replaced for another. You might have a defective unit if thats the case.
