1987 factory radio in "theft mode"
Hello to all and many compliments on a great forum. I just purchased a 1987 300sdl with the factory gran prix stereo cassette radio. It is showing the dashes for the anti-theft pattern and the local dealer wants $47.00 to re-activate it. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Keith |

You have a greedy dealer. Mine would short out (circuit is same as passenger vanity mirror) but dealer would always reset for $0 it just takes about 5 seconds

becker grand prix reset
I have an86 300E and recently asked the same question. My local dealer told me only they can reset the radio. What does the dealer do to reset the radio and why can't it be reset by the owner?

Mine qouted my $65-75,
Their reason was possible liability if the faceplate cracks or breaks. My understanding is behind the faceplate(or maybe back of the radio??), there is a code. They have a factory tool which plugs in and they enter the code. Simple- except the tool. Thinking of a new Becker.... Michael

It's mainly just a special tool thing. You remove the faceplate (I've NEVER broken one removing it!) and this white box plugs in to the same electrical connectors the faceplate plugs in to. After that, it depends on the year, a small instruction sheet comes with this tool. The tool just has 2 buttons on it, you push the button then turn on the ignition or vice versa, real easy to do, again it depends on which year the car is. We never charged to do that either if it was say a once per year thing for an owner. If they needed it done again right away we told them the radio needs to be fixed, we like to help but not every 2 weeks, besides it's just a hassle for them too. Usually $150 to $200 for a rebuilt radio chassis, lot's of times they shop Best Buy and get upgraded to an indash CD player, can't blame them either.

This radio doesn't use a number code, there is a descrambler box (special tool) that takes the radio out of the "dashed line mode". Gilly
