W124 Stereo Installs
 

I would like to see installation pictures of members cars. I have a 1994 E420 I am sourcing audio equipment for and would like to see install pics for some ideas if nobody minds. I am especially interested in the sub installs as I hear this is a tricky undertaking.

Best bet is to just buy a big ass sub, an even bigger amp.
Next, hope to God you can overpower the deadly sound vacuum that rests between the rear seats and the trunk known as the gas tank.

I would post pics of my setup but it is always changing, and since last time I havent made it look pretty.

a single 12" JL Audio 12w3d4 in a small 13" cube box, and a 4 " hole cut in the first aid kit. you can definately here and feel the bass just fine with that setup.

In my W124 car, I had a 12" sub in an enclosure like Ashman described, but without the 4" cutout in the first aid lid.

It was powered by a very powerful Nakamichi amp (retailed at about $1,000). It put out enough bass to vibrate the whole car.

Would you be able to post some pictures of the 4" cut out from the top (inside of the car) and from below (inside the trunk)?

Its not pretty...

I had a different box int he car and that hole was originally running fromt he port in the box intot he car.

So it is off center and in a bad place.

Later plans for me are to cut out the bottom of the first aid box completely, and make it look nicer.

I just put in a whole new system on my 260E W124 last weekend. I put in the Pioneer 6700-MP cd player. Pioneer 4" speakers in the front. Rockford Power 5 1/4 in the back, A Rockford amp p4004 1200 watt 4 channel powering the rear speakers and a 12inch Rockford stage 2 sub. I have a 4 inch hole drilled in the back deck where my first aid kit is. I got a box port tube and put that in there, and then covered it with neutral speaker fabic. It matches perfectly with the back deck and no one knows theres a 4 inch hole there. The sub sounds great for the rock music I listen to (it was actually loud enough without the hole but once I cut it, the deep tones really filled the cabin much better, obviously because it didn't have a 19 gallon gas tank to penetrate). My brother has a 240D with the deck drilled out but he has 2 12inch stage 3 Rockford Subs, and his could shatter glass if he wanted. I spent about 3 months researching every brand for the best set up for my money so trust me I know just about everything about whats out there right now.

MBZ OE, your installation is amazing. I'm very very impressed.

I'm most interested in your dynamatting. I considered doing this in my car, but I thought it would be way too hard to do. I also figured that it wouldn't make much of a difference because the sound dampening is pretty good from the factory.

That said, what kind of results have you noticed? Has it made enough of a difference to justify the time and expense? I know my interior panelling is pretty different from yours since mine is the coupe version, but what advice/comments could you give about the process? Was it tough to make sure everything fit back together? Was it difficult to plan it out such that if something broke in your door (say, a window regulator or motor, etc), you could still easily access them?

I just had an Alpine head-unit (9851) installed in my daughter's 300TE. I also had them install the KCA-4201 iPod interface.

There was no good place to install a CD changer in her wagon, so I figure that with the iPod interface she can listen to ALL of her music. (Besides, CDs are so 20th century!!!)

Eventually I will have to change out the dash and door speakers, they sound just OK.

Any suggestions on aftermarket speakers for the dash and doors?

Actually my installer mounted the CD changer in the right rear wheel well area, near the washer fluid tank.
I'm leaning toward the IPOD now also, because the CD changer lost a channel.

I considered that location as well. But I did not want my little girl fussing with the side cover each time she wanted to change CDs. Plus kids now don't use CDs anymore. They are all into the iPod thing. As I have been informed, CDs are "...so 20th century!"

I had a chance to drive her car with the iPod and it is really a blast. The music selection is endless.

I also added an iPod interface to my other daughter's volvo wagon (my kids are into wagons, when they were babies I bought my wife a Volvo wagon and they were shuffled around in a volvo wagon for many years...until my wife went "Suburban"). Anyway, the iPOd interface for the Volvo does not h ave as many functions as the Alpine interface, but at least she does not have to use FM modulation or the cassette player.

Of course, while my kids ride in the lap of audio luxury, their mom and I have to do with crappy Delco-Bose units. Oh well, they do get to pick our rest homes, so we better be nice to them... :rolleyes:

My daughter (age 6) gets to ride mostly in my wife's 2002 Mercury Mountaineer with the audiophile sound system (factory subwoofer and in-dash 6 disc CD changer). It's actually not bad for a factory system.
I have an Alpine cassette head unit that is close to 10 years old, and I'm not sure how I could connect an iPOD to the mini-DIN umbilical.
If I go FM I'd be kicking myself for paying $$$ to have the Alpine head unit put in and the factory amps and speakers changed ... the factory unit played louder, but didn't have CD capability.
Any cheap suggestions appreciated ... my thoughts are to find a working CD changer on Ebay or go for the Ipod FM interface. I say cheap because I'm not in a position to drop big $$$$ into car audio at this point.

BENZ-LGB, Who did the install and what did it cost? I'd like to update my Becker with CD/MP3.

I went to LaJolla Audio for new dash speakers (Rainbow), for about $240. I'm in Orange County and am looking for a local resource. Bruce Strauss recommends Beach Autosound in Costa Mesa.
