Becker balance control?

I just bought a 1989 560SEL and it came with the Premium 10 speaker sould system and a Becker radio.

I see that the front/rear level control is on the center console - how do I adjust the Left/Right balance? The becker has no English labels controls - all icons. I have no owners manual and can't figure out how to really iuse this radio. Plus, the LCD display has lost some pixels so it is hard to read.

If your car has the 10 speaker sound system, this radio should have the extra little "box" attached to the rear. This is an added amplifier for the "special" system.

If you're experiencing balance problems, it could be just a balance adjustment, but its probably amplifier related. If the radio has lost some pixels too, it might be on the way out. The best resource for answers on this radio is at Becker of North America, 1-800-423-3537. You can find info on the owner's manual at thier site:
BE780 Manual

It shows how to adjust L/R balance.

Hope this helps.

See that lil Star on the headunit on the right side? Push that once and the display will go blank... then push the tone buttons (Bass/Treble) to go left or right.

Thanks HitMan. I finally got the manual and figured that out, only to discover with dismay that the right side isn't working

Don 't know yet if it is the amp or the radio that is defective, am having a new HU installed tomorrow.

What questions do you have on the unit?

I believe the 780 *is* the Grand Prix - that's what I have in my 89 560SEL.

The panning is on the Becker, the fader is a rocker panel on the copnsole.

This link still works:

The Becker in the '87 300E doesn't have L/R balance control, just the F/R fader on the center console.

I see. I guess there are several models of the Grand Prix. I stand corrected.

Have you tried pushing that "Star" as I outlined then adjusting via the bass and treble controls as outlined? I seriously doubt MB would let Becker have a radio without key tone adjustments such as that...

Try it.

update - new HU installed

Well, the Becker wasn't the problem - it turned out to be that the right amp was fried.

I took the excellent advice of other posters here and put in a new 4-channel head unit (Sony CDX-F5705X) and by-passed the amps, using the stock MB speakers.

WOW!! What a difference. The sound is huge, full, rich - all the superlatives apply. I might spend the whole day in the car just listening to music. I had XM installed and it is great to hear radio without hiss, static or reception problems.

Next I want to replace the fader rocker switch with a multi-door lock switch so I don't have to use the key to look the doors.

Thanks to SCLJA La Jolla Audio, BigBenzWV, Scott98, RickG and Edge for all your informative posts. This forum has been invaluable in my quest to bring my 560 up to current standards.

-gil, grateful in New Jersey
