I want to be able to plug in tape players, and mini discs. Can someone tell me if my plan will work fine.
My head unit does not have an auxiliary input so I was thinking that I could do it like this: Plug in Y-adapters into the input plugs of my EQ. Then the signal from the Headunit goes into one set of inputs while the signal from the Tape/Minidisc player goes into the other set. So when I want to play from the tape/minidisc I simply turn down the volume on the head to zero and plug in the tape/minidisc. I would appreciate any input. Mladen |

Nope, no good. Try to find an RCA source switcher. Check out http://www.partsexpress.com

Q thanks for the tip but would you mind elaborating on why this would not work.

my thought would be to get one of those tape cassette adapters that has a mini stereo jack on it to plug into the output of the device. But this only applies if you have a tape deck.
If you don't have a tape deck, you will want to use something like what Q Mentioned. Perhaps a local stereo store you know of can wire in something for you. I know that they can do it so you can plug in headphones, so why couldn't they do it so you can plug in an external audio device. I think the reason the splitter that you want to do wont work well for you is that it will most likely cut the signal down. If the device you are hooking up to it doesn't have a stonr enough signal output, you could end up losing volume on your system because of a low power signal. Thats my 2 cents. Alon

RCA outputs expect to see a load, not a voltage source connected to them. There are amplifier circuits supplying the RCA outputs to deliver the signal to your amplifiers. Applying a voltage source to these circuits could damage them. Outputs can go to multiple inputs, but you can't connect multiple inputs. You will let the smoke out.

Q, From what I picked up you are saying that I can not connect multiple inputs. But as long as I keep only one on at a time, wouldn't it be okay. Because from the EQ's point of view it is getting only one input signal at a time. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Even if one device is on and one is off and you have both connected, you could damage either one of the units. I wouldn't do it. Even if you think it is working, you could insert a DC offset into the signal and damage your speakers, or create a ground loop that would cause noise in the line.
