88 W124 Front Speaker Replacements
The front speakers in my 1988 300E are shot. Can anyone tell me up to what year W124 MB has the same front speakers as my 88 300E. I have many good junk yards in area and want to see what I can get out of a wreck.
Thanks for your help in advance

Hey I have a 1988 260E W124. This past weekend I just dropped in a new pair of 4inch pioneer speakers. They sound amazing and I really wouldn't recommend getting an old set unless you're trying to maintain a totally classic look. These speakers don't need much power and they sound tremendous at least 4x better than the factory ones. I picked them up from Best Buy for around $40. I also have a 1983 240D and I know that both of my cars have the same size front speaker. The grille's are very simple to get off they only have two small phillps head screws holding them down. I'm sure if you find some old MB's from around the same generation they will all have the same dash speaker. If you wanted, you could easily pull out the speakers of a random MB in very little time if you suspect they have the same size speaker. I'm no speaker expert but I got mine out in about 5 mins. Good Luck

Here is what it wouldn't let me PM to you
Suprisingly enough the Pioneers were a tad smaller than the stock holes for the standard speaker. I don't remember the model number but just ask for the 4" Pioneer speakers, I believe they only carry one type of that size/brand. Don't let them sell you on anything else, the Rockford speakers are amazing but the tweeter sticks out too far for the stock cover you need something as flush as possible. The tabs on the side gave just enough overlay to drill them right in. You can't use the regular screws they come with, you need to get some longer ones that will go into sheet metal, thick sheet metal, I personally only used two screws per speakers. The metal its a little thicker than a nickel so you need a strong drill but only use 2 screws instead of 4, there isn't a chance that they'll go anywhere. Snip the end of the old wire and crimp them both together and you'll have an amazing sounding speaker for a cheap price. If they hiss or cut out pull up the center panel and clean the fader switch with some contact cleaner. (mine hissed a little bit but there was a lot of corrosion on the contacts of the switch and the cleaner fixed it right up) If you're good with cars it should only take about 30mins, if you only like to do it for fun maybe an hour, but if you hate it BB will do it for like another $20 or so. I think my total cost was ($55) http://www.cardomain.com/item/PIOTSG1040R (this looks very similar but I think this speaker was last years model the one I have handles about 20 more watts but I've seen them in 3 BB's so you should be able to find it easily)
Anything else you may need send me a mesg. let me know how it goes too. Good Luck! Chris
