I suppose this has been asked a million times already on this forum...but i am gonna ask anyway,
What good aftermarket speakers will fit in the stock speaker wells of my '87 300D? My becker is sounding junky and my wife wants a CD player which I have.It is an Alpine
140 watt head unit single CD.I'm sure the stock speackers won't last too long with the boost in power.I checked out Crutchfield and only came up with one match. The removal of the stock becker unit looks fairly simple but the speakers are odd sizes.Any suggestions? Thanks,J.S.
P.S. Speakers only...

I am in the process of replacing my speakers (see the stereo removal article under the DIY tab above for how to get the speakers and head unit out of the dash). The oneas that sound the best and come closest to fitting are the MB Quart (expensive, weak mids/lows, better with external amp, I am told).
The Boston Acoustics 4" speakers (Rx47 or Fx4) sound very good, but modifications to fill the gap between the 4" speaker and the 4 1/2 plus" hole in the dash are needed.
The Diamond Audios make a 4 1/2" speaker (m341i) that sounds good as well and needs less hole filler.

Or, Blaupunkt makes an exact size replacement speaker that the folks at Continental Imports can get .

If I were going with an external amp and sound processing, I would probably try the MBQuartz or Bostons. Without the external amp, it would be Bostons or Diamond Audio. If I didn't want to mess with filling holes, etc and didn't care THAT much about sound purity - just wanted background music or news- i would probably get the Blaupunkts.

Hope this helps.

The rear speakers are difficult to replace because of the plastic housing so I went with the direct replacement from continental_imports who ordered them for me using the website as a guide. Great for your rear passengers but you won't here them without screwing up your stereo imaging so you might not want to bother with them.
For the front I went with the Polks you probably saw at crutchfield. Had to do away with the mounting of the old speakers and screwed them into the deck. The front deck has a metal backing underneath its surface that needs to be drilled through otherwise the screws won't get anywhere, and I used some foam insulation on the speaker borders to compensate for their uneven borders and help seal the air from the back. Produces clean tight sound from my as is Kenwood excelon.
Hope this helps in some way....
