Getting dash speakers to sound decent

Well many of us only have dash speakers and don't want to cut up our doors to get a good sound upfront.

How do you get them to sound decent? I have 2 pairs of 4" Boston Acoustics coaxials in my 190E, the ones in the front sound weak with no low frequencies at all below about 300Hz, whereas the same speakers in the back make fairly good bass and sound fine.

I have them sealed into the dash around the top with silicon, but to no avail. I guess the problem is that they don't mount into a sealed box, they just sit in the dash, and its almost like running a speaker loose on its own without a box (you know know how terrible that sounds).

What about if I somehow sealed the inside of the dash enclosure where the speakers mount in, so they sit in their own silicon-sealant cocoon? (Probably would have to make it from something other than silicon sealant though!)

This is the exact reason why anyone wishing to get good sound either cross over the fronts to get no bass or mount speakers in the doors....See enclosed picture in thread 123 Install.
