capacitor on front speaker 91 300e

The highs on the left front speaker of my 91 300e go out and come back when I increase the volume. Could his be possibly due to the faulty capacitor strapped to the speaker? Does anyone know what the replacement capacitor is. The speaker sounds fine except for this intermittent loss of high end.

Thanks, Dave

More than likely it is not the cap...It is more likely the voice coil in the speaker or in other words the speaker itself...

I've never seen a non polarized eletrolytic capacitor go bad. Plus even if somehow the electrolyte did manage to leak out, there is no way for it to have an intermittent connection.

One of two things is happening here. Either if this a dual cone, or coaxial speaker, the solder joint connecting the tweeter could have gone bad. Take a soldering iron and reflow the joint, dont add solder unless you have too, it makes a mess.

Now are you sure the speaker loses just the high end, and not the entire thing?

Take care,

George

Many thanks. It could actually be the entire speaker whichcomes back on with an increase in volume. Possibly a weak connection somewhere?

Wait.... the speaker comes and goes with the turn of the volume.... Is this with a becker radio, with the stock fader switch.

Does it crackle at all, or can you get it to come and go based on pushing on or jiggling the volume knob....

I'm thinking the potentiometer on the volume control is going bad.... Also are you SURE its just the front speaker, and not that side of the car front and rear?

Take care,

George

Many thanks. It is definitely the front right speaker only. Sometimes stays on , sometimes I need to jack volume up to get it to turn on. Could be the radio or a speaker connection. I removed the speaker and all looked good.

Thanks again

Something, most likely inside the radio is loose electrically. Does jacking up the volume cause it to come on barely, or at the same volume of the other speakers? I'm thinking maybe a connection is corroded somewhere and exibiting properties of higher electrical resistance?

Take care,

George

If you really want to diagnose the problem swop the speaker with the other one and notice the problem will follow the speaker....
