2005 SL500 stereo upgrade

I just bought a 2005 SL500. The only thing that dissapoints me about the car is the stereo.

It is underpowered and lacks a decent subwoofer.

I am being told that upgrading it is not an option due to the fiber optic connections.

Does anyone know if this is true, or know where I can get more information?
