will a cd changer skip more if it's not bolted to something?
Today I installed a cd changer in my '87 300SDL and haven't had time to actually screw it in by the storage panels (up top by the lid). I don't know for sure that the changer is good because I work at a used car dealer and we took it out of a car that came through. It is a Pioneer CDX-FM623S and plays well, but the slightest imperfections in the road cause it to skip. Out of curiosity I placed it on a bunched up comforter in there and it still skips like crazy. I read something about people setting springs or something depending if the changer is mounted vertically or horizontally? The changer was mounted vertically in the other car but I have the brackets set to horizontally, though really I only left one screw in each side so the bracket can swivel around.
I would like to know that this changer is good before I go and start drilling, etc. needlessly into my trunk. Thanks David

I saw one relevant thread from 2003 and he said his was skipping but was cured when he adjusted the angle settings? Anyways, I don't have a manual for the changer so I don't know how to do this. How is this done?
Thanks David

I had a changer that sat on the backseat of a truck for years that never skipped...
Sounds like a changer problem.

Most changers are engineered to be permanantly mounted as they use viscous mounting points to be attached to the outside case. You would be defeating the purpose of the engineering of the case by having it hang loose. Some changers might not skip if not permanantly mounted but that would be a rarity.
