Recomendations..on materials.

I am creating a new rear deck in my two Benzes...to house a pair of 10" free air sub-woofers and a set of 6.5 inch coaxial speakers..

Here is my question....I am going to built these in such a way as to raise the center deck area about an inch or two to allow clearance to the fuel tank under them...I am relocating the vacuum resivoir on both to clear.

Will MDF Fiberboard work or should I use plywood ...I will cover the finishe panel in carpet.

I would expect to use some paint to seal the MDF from moisture and dampness it will be exposed to in a car.

I dont recommend plywood. They are prone to extreme vibrations. Buy some MDF or a similar material called Novoply. 1/2" or 5/8" should be good.

I used MDF, and it worked great! I did use a sealer like you spoke of.

I just put 6x9's in the rear deck and covered it in black matte vinyl to match the dash.

It looks and sounds great.

Well I managed to shatter the lid of the First aid kit on the W123 so that looks like crap now...I want subs and feel the rear deck is my best option...then I can take out the Bazzoka thats taking up 1/2 my rear floor.

I have the exact setup as you mentioned with a 10" woofer along with a pair of 6.5". I used half inch MDF and wrap with black fabric. Let me take some pics and email me when I'm home.

Please do that...I am going to run a pair of 10" subs... and move the vacuum resivoir to allow it.

BHD is looking to: in the benzo.

My recommendation is also mdf, get some dynamat too, and seal the wood as well.

if you want to get creative, you can get the spray foam, and after it has hardened and expanded, you can shape it and create cool contours before you overlay whatever fabric or covering you decide on.

Just food for thought.

I like a solid bass note to my music.(but no I don't do rap)...the MB Quart speakers do quite well but lack that component...and I get annoyed with the bazooka taking up the entire floor on the pass side rear...

I won't get creative on contours.... I'm keeping it simple and as low key as I can make it. But yes I will Dynamat the metal parts and definately will seal the MDF after Its shaped but before the carpet or materal is put over it..I have a Palamino interior but may do the deck in black so the speakers don't stand out as much visually.

I'm doing the same thing on my W116 after I finish the W123....

I got a deal on 4 new Blaupunkt 10" Subs........$50 each.

You can do 6.5 without cutting any metal...

remove the rear seat AFTER removing the first aid kit....or you will break it...don't ask how I know...

then it will become clear how it flexes and lifts out....

you should document your installation and all BHD for others in the forum.

I know what you mean. I listed to all kinds of music, and I like good sound, the beauty if that if done right, it sounds great in the car, but you can barely hear it outside the car.

Bazookas work well, but I prefer a good old fashioned suba nd box myself.

Keep us updated.

I'm trying to avoid a seperate sub box in the trunk...I may be getting a aux fuel tank for WVO application ...thats why I searched high and low for free air rated subs to use in the rear deck..(not an easy task) .I'm not running SPL competition...I just want the best sound hile giving up no space if possible. For average listening volume...and I vary from Mozart to Megadeath .(love the drum rolls on Wherever it may roam by Metallica)....what I don't do is Jazz or rap.

I'm 44 and not deaf yet....nor do I want to be.
